Ireland, San Marino, Malta victorious on opening day of SCA U18 Women’s Championship

The 2025 edition of the U18 Women’s Championship organised by the CEV Small Countries Association (SCA) started on Thursday in Malta with three matches on the programme – resulting in victories for Ireland, San Marino and the home favourites representing the Mediterranean archipelago. 

Malta started their campaign on home soil with a 3-0 victory over Ireland

In a thrilling opening match, Ireland edged out Monaco with a 3-2 victory. The Irish team started strong, securing the first two sets with scores of 25-21 and a dominant 25-13. However, Monaco’s youthful and energetic squad responded impressively, claiming the next two sets 25-18 and 25-9, thus pushing the match into a decisive fifth set. Ireland regained momentum in the final set, clinching it 15-8 to seal the win. Standout performances included Ireland’s Gabi Smolen, who contributed 16 points, and Monaco’s Cassia Schubler, who led all scorers with 21 points. Additionally, Irish libero Marianna Peipina delivered a commendable defensive performance, bolstering Ireland’s backcourt resilience. 

San Marino secured a 3-0 victory over Northern Ireland with set scores of 25-19, 25-23, and 25-14. Despite the straight-set loss, Northern Ireland displayed resilience, particularly in the second set, challenging San Marino to a narrow 25-23 finish. Alice Pedrelli stood out for San Marino, delivering powerful left-handed attacks that consistently breached Northern Ireland’s defence. On the Northern Ireland side, libero Hope Ballantyne exhibited exceptional defensive skills, demonstrating quick reflexes and ensuring numerous successful receptions throughout the match. 

Host nation Malta secured a 3-0 victory over Ireland with set scores of 25-17, 25-13, and 25-13. The Maltese team overcame initial nerves to dominate the match, showcasing strategic prowess and resilience. Captain Shania Camilleri led by example, delivering an inspired performance that galvanised her team. On her national team debut, middle blocker Keira Xerri de Caro made a notable impact with six kill points, highlighting her potential as a valuable asset for Malta. For Ireland, Emily Quinlivan-Nolan exhibited versatility and skill through her effective backcourt attacks, providing her team with diverse offensive options. Despite Ireland’s determined efforts, Malta’s cohesive play and home-court advantage propelled them to a decisive win in their opening match of the tournament.
