With Serbia and Hungary heading the group that they are due to host the remaining 14 teams were divided into seven cups of two each as per the latest European Ranking in the U17 women’s age group ahead of the Drawing of Lots held on Friday morning at the home of European Volleyball in Luxembourg City.
Following completion of the DOL, the pool composition reads as follows:
The pool stage of the tournament will follow the single-round robin format, with each team contesting seven matches in the group – and the top two eventually progressing to the semis and subsequent medal matches due to take place in Serbia. Two cities with much tradition and a rich history in Volleyball – Vrnjačka Banja in Serbia and Békéscsaba in Hungary – will welcome the stars in the making of European Volleyball from July 11-22, 2023.
The full match schedule for the pool stage shall follow in due course.
The event features 16 teams for the very first time after the CEV Board of Administration decided to expand the number of participants from 12 to 16 to provide additional opportunities to the rising stars of the game to compete at the highest continental level. Georgia have qualified for the very first time for the final stage of an age-group European Championship without being the actual organisers of the event.
Back in 2021, when the age limit did still stand at 16, Russia won gold with Italy and Bulgaria completing the podium at the end of the championship held in Nyiregyhaza, Hungary and Humenne, Slovakia.
