As Portugal navigates a demanding CEV Enel EuroVolley 2026 Men campaign, the trio Alexandre Ferreira, Lourenço Martins and Filip Cvetićanin reaches a significant personal milestone - marking their fourth appearance together on Europe’s grandest stage (2019, 2021, 2023, and 2026). In a tournament where every set is a battle and results do not come easy, they represent the reliable spine keeping the team grounded.
Alexandre Ferreira: the unshakable captain
As team captain and outside hitter, Alexandre Ferreira has long been the emotional and tactical anchor for Portugal. Having played at the highest levels in top European leagues - including Italy, Poland, and France - Ferreira brings invaluable international poise to the squad. Across four consecutive EuroVolley editions, his role has shifted from a primary scoring outlet to the guiding voice for younger teammates entering their first major continental tournament. When pressure mounts late in tight sets, the ball inevitably finds #6.
Alex carried a unique mix of emotion and nostalgia onto the court when Portugal faced Poland in Sofia, having spent key years of his career competing in the prestigious PlusLiga - the very place where he also met his wife.
“She was definitely cheering for me, when we played Poland," Ferreira says with a smile."I played there for a few years and met my wife there, so it’s always special. I still have great relationships with many of the guys. I love Poland for its Volleyball culture - the support is incredible. In Portugal, it’s mostly football, football, football, from the media to TV. It’s a totally different mindset. I live in Portugal now, but I admire how Poles live and breathe this sport. They travel everywhere for it."
Ferreira points out that the transition between the generations in Portugal is tough, but he and his more experienced teammates try to help the youngsters.
“Many of our guys have never played at this level and get nervous, but I hope they learn step by step. Playing teams like Bulgaria and Poland is a huge test where errors will happen, but that's how you learn. I try to talk to the youngers a lot, but they don't listen!", Alex states laughing.

Lourenço Martins: the dynamic edge
Outside hitter Lourenço Martins embodies the athleticism and relentless energy of this Portuguese generation. Bursting onto the EuroVolley scene alongside Ferreira and Cvetićanin in 2019, Martins has spent the last seven years sharpening his game across Europe's competitive leagues. Known for his explosive vertical jump, high-tempo attacking, and tough service pressure, Martins provides the offensive firepower needed to unseat higher-ranked opponents.
Lourenço Martins“It is always an honor to represent Portugal, even when key players are missing. There is so much potential in this new generation. Volleyball isn't huge back home, so I feel proud of what we are doing for Portuguese Volleyball. Sharing this journey with Filip and Alex means a lot. They were already here when I joined the national team, and now I embrace the leadership responsibility that comes with being one of the veterans.”

Reflecting on the general transition in Portuguese Volleyball, Lourenço adds:
“I hope I’m not retired in ten years! These younger players just need to find strong leagues where they can develop. The domestic league in Portugal is growing, and more young players are heading abroad - something my generation didn't experience as early. Looking ahead, mixing our experienced core with the fearlessness of this new generation can really push us forward. it might sound strange to say the future looks bright after the losses in Sofia, but this is a very tough group. Yes, the future is bright. We have players with great potential, and I hope the federation does everything possible to support them.”
Filip Cvetićanin: the wall in the middle
In the center of the net, middle blocker Filip Cvetićanin offers the physical presence and reading of the game that every modern national team requires. Through four EuroVolley cycles, Cvetićanin has established himself as one of the most reliable net defenders. His timing, transition attack, and loud court presence give Portugal the essential balance between back-row defence and front-row control.
Filip Cvetićanin“We expected more from ourselves here, but that’s sport - sometimes things go your way, sometimes they don’t. Compared to my first EuroVolley, we have a lot of young players experiencing this level and starting for the first time, so the pressure is real.”

“We do our best to help them, though I’m not as calm as Lourenço or Alex. They are more emotionally stable, while I tend to hold back because I know I might end up screaming! Managing those emotions on the court is always a balancing act,” Cveticanin smiles.
Playing in Sofia feels almost like home for Filip Cvetićanin, whose parents are from Serbia. When asked about his roots, the Portuguese middle blocker instinctively replies in fluent Serbian.
“Yes, my parents are from Serbia. It feels great to be back playing in the Balkans. Having played in Romania too, I feel right at home here - I speak Serbian and can understand a bit of Bulgarian as well.”
A bridge between generations
When Portugal qualified for EuroVolley 2019, it ended an eight-year absence from the tournament main draw. Today, qualifying is no longer a surprise; it is the standard expected by Portuguese Volleyball.
Having three core players reach four consecutive tournaments provides the roster with tactical memory. They know the rhythm of major match days, the intensity required to survive, and how to execute under pressure. As a new generation of Portuguese talent steps up, Ferreira, Martins, and Cvetićanin serve as both the foundation and the benchmark.
