Türkiye Wins Opening Quarter-Final to guarantee an Olympic Medal for Europe
News
The European reigning champions, Türkiye has become the first team to book a spot in the semi-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympics and their win means that the Silver Medal is guaranteed for Europe as they are set to face either Italy or Serbia in the next round.
Yet another quarter-finals match to need a tie-break in Paris, after two in the men's competition just yesterday, Türkiye and China pushed each other into a five-set thriller that had everyone gasping for air.
Melissa Vargas was phenomenal once again for Türkiye, giving her teammates the confidence that she can get the points every time they set her up, which she did 42 times (38 attack points, 2 blocks, 2 aces)! An outstanding achievement to put her at the top of the scoring charts in a single match at this year's Olympic Games and second ever after Barbara Jelic from Croatia, who scored 44 in one match in Sydney 2000.
Captain Eda Erdem continues to inspire an entire nation, being at the core of her team's dynamics while also contributing to the scoring board (9 pts). There is still more work to do for Türkiye, as the European Champions will be facing a familiar rival in the semis, one of the teams that they won against in the semis and final of the CEV EuroVolley 2023 to claim the title.
