Snow Volleyball national event held on Mount Etna, Sicily
News
Sicily is probably not the sort of place that you would naturally associate with a Snow Volleyball competition – however the Italian Volleyball Federation did manage to make history about a week ago through the delivery of a domestic event on snow in Linguaglossa, on the northern side of the iconic Mount Etna.
To the best of our knowledge, this is the southern-most place to have hosted a Snow Volleyball event to this date. The tournament coincided with the first stop of the Italian national championship and featured a men’s competition only – with the trio comprising of Giuseppe La Rosa, Andrea Di Salvo and Riccardo Garofalo – all hailing from Palermo – claiming a Sicilian derby with Andronico/Andronico/Lombardo in the final.
Claudio Martinengo, a native of Catania who spent many years playing in the highly competitive Italian A2 Series, was among those to contest the event at Linguaglossa. He eventually finished the tournament in third place after making history by scoring the very first point of the competition held on Sicilian snow.
The Italian national championship will be reaching its climax in a few weeks’ time – with the final stage due to run from April 1-3 in Prato Nevoso, where the eventual national champions will emerge.
