Volleyball fans have ‘nicknamed’ the iconic Max-Schmeling-Halle ‘Germany’s Volleyball temple’. Actually, it is much more than just that – since this venue has played host to an impressive number of major international competitions as well, such as the 2002 FIVB Women’s World Championship, 2003 EuroVolley Men, 2013 EuroVolley Women, as well as the historic CEV Champions League Volley 2019 Super Finals back in May – to name only a few highlights. The Hall also plays as hosts to the Berlin Recycling Volleys, Germany's most decorated volleyball club with 10 Bundesliga titles and a CEV cup title in 2015/2016. The arena is located at Am Falkpl. 1, 10437 Berlin, Germany and holds up to 12,000 spectators. Capacity: 8533

Match Report

Fakel NOVY URENGOY fight back from 2 down to tighten grip on Pool B

Article

After getting off to a bad start, the Russians from Urengoy won 3-2 in Berlin. Indeed, the Germans first led 2-0 before yielding to the team effort of Placi's men, who were playing without superstar Egor Kliuka.  In their comeback, three players topped the scoring tables with 16 points: Denis Bogdan, Krisztian Padar, and Dmitrii Volkov. Still strugging for the first place in Pool B, the winners will have to beat their direct opponents, Kuzbass Kemerovo, at home, on February 12. As for Berlin, who could rely on a good Benjamin Patch (19), they can still hope to qualify, but they will need a perfect record from now on.

- As many as 4.583 spectators wanted to see the German champion BERLIN Recycling Volleys facing Russian side Fakel NOVY URENGOY in their last home game of group stage in CEV Champions League Volley 2020
- It was the eighth time since BR Volleys play on biggest stage in European's club volleyball to host a Russian opponent in Max-Schmeling-Halle. This time BERLIN couldn't improve their record (now 2 wins - 6 losses)
- Erik Shoji, who received balls for BERLIN from 2014 to 2016, got a very warm welcome by the "volleyball-temple" and played once again a great match for his new team like he did when both sides meet in December in Siberia (Fakel won 3-0)
- After BR Volleys were able to suprise Fakel NOVY URENGOY during the first two sets (25-21, 25-15) this time, the Super League bronze medalists from 2019 started to attack and block extremly well (20-25, 22-25, 10-15) and earned the provisional lead in Pool B
- 23 year-old outside-spiker Denis Bogdan showed his skills, exspecially in the tie-break, and secured hisself the title "Match MVP" by scoring 16 points for FAKEL
- While NOVY URENGOY seems on the direct way to make it to the quarterfinals, BR Volleys are in a must-win situation to keep theirs hopes alive from now on

“First two sets we performed very well in service, defense and attack. We showed what we are able to play. The Russians helped us by making too many errors. We did not expect that. Afterwards we struggled and Fakel came back in a strong way. Reaching the quarter-final is now far away for us, but we will keep on fighting.”
