Stuttgart want to win the historical ticket

Allianz MTV Stuttgart, second in the pool with 10 points, entertain winless Khimik Yuzhny of Ukraine. A three-point victory for the hosts would stamp their ticket to the quarterfinals. On Sunday, Allianz narrowly missed the national cup of Germany losing to Dresdner SC by 15-17 in the tie-breaker. Despite the disappointment, they hope history will repeat itself, since last year, right after losing the German Cup final, the squad from Stuttgart managed to win their last game in their Champions League pool and become the first women’s team from their country to reach the quarterfinals.

Allianz MTV STUTTGART v Khimik YUZHNY

Article 18 February 2020

It was a big night for the team from Stuttgart. They were fighting for being again the quarterfinals of #CLVolleyW as the first ever women's German team. Host team won in the straight sets, but it was not an easy game.

There was a fantastic atmosphere in the arena, as their fans came to support the team, especially after a tough loss on Sunday - German champions lost in the final of the national cup, what was a big disappointment. Coach Ioannis Athanasopoulos motivated his team in last two days and his players showed their best against Khimik. In the first two sets Stuttgart easily won led by Krystal Rivers and Simone Lee.

The beginning of third set looked like the away team found the extra strenght to fight. Germans could not focus on the game and let the guests led 6-0. Home coach asked for the time-out and tried to woke up his girls. It worked, because Stuttgart started to make up the losses. Khimik played a way better, their levelled up the performance as Yuliya Boyko took the responsibility for scoring. On the second technical time-out German team led 16-15 and got back to their game again, let the Ukrainians score only two more points. The MVP of the match was chosen Krystal Rivers with 19 points scored.

Daria Stepanovska, outside spiker of Khimik YUZHNY: Tonight it was a very difficult game for us, we had some difficult and hard matches in the past few weeks especially with the cup final last weekend. We were tired so we couldn't show our best tonight but we move on.

Tetyana Kozlova, ouitside spiker of Khimik YUZHNY: It was a difficult game in a great atmosphere here in Stuttgart.

Roosa Koskelo, libero of Allianz MTV Stuttgart: We wanted to put everything we have into this game, we know that we can't change the past, but we wanted to turn it apart with tonight's game. I'm proud of our reaction also thanks to this great atmosphere in Stuttgart, it was still a quite sad atmosphere this morning, but we wanted to realize the quarterfinals tonight, it's a big achievement.

Kim Renkema, receiver of Allianz MTV STUTTGART: I am proud of the reaction the team has shown today, it was difficult after the tough loss on Sunday, but now we are happy. To reach the quarterfinals of the Champions League the second time in a row is something, we can build on, we are proud of. There was not really time to catch up after the national cup, so the team wanted to show a reaction.
