Ukrainian women's volleyball players entered the final match of the CEV EuroVolley 2023 Qualifiers already with certain progress. Their opponents were players from Hungary, who were already certain of participating in the CEV EuroVolley 2023. The match for first place in Group C was interrupted after twenty minutes of play by a power outage in Kutná Hora. The one-hour break didn’t affect the Ukrainian players, they swept Hungary clearly in three sets and thus maintained their invincibility in the qualification.
In the last match in the qualification, Ukraine hosted Hungary in Kutná Hora. Both teams had the certainty of advancing to the EuroVolley 2023. This match was a battle for first place in qualifying group C. The start of the match was even, both teams played patiently and created long rallies. Hungarian players gave some points to their opponents because they served to the out. From the score of 12:12, the Hungarians managed to score only one point, while the Ukrainians scored five points in a row. At 18:13, the match was interrupted due to a power outage. After one hour, the match continued. Ukraine had a few points lead and they scored after a forced break, too. Finally, they won the set at 25:16.
In the second set, Hungarians led 5:1. Ukraine made the score even when Dymar was on the serve. After that, the match was even again. At 11:11, Ukrainian players made three points in a row, they didn’t want to give a chance to their opponents, and they were increasing their lead. Before the end of the set, Ukraine led 22:15. It looked like Hungarian players lost their game drive because of the long break. Ukraine dominated on the court and won the second set.
The third set was under Ukrainian control from the beginning. They created a three-point lead and then increased it even more. Hungary failed to respond to the Ukrainian combination and offense, they made mistakes in their spikes, and they lost twelve points, the score was 4:16. After that, Hungary was only able to score twelve points. The Ukrainian women didn’t allow any complications, they remained the only undefeated team and won the qualifying group C.
Ivan Petkov"We knew that both teams had some progress, but it was really important for us to win. It was about placing in the world rankings so that we could play the Olympic qualification. It wasn't easy today, but the girls played well, everyone played what they had to and thanks to that we won. We're just not going to do anything with that break, it wasn't up to us, but up to God."
Head coach of Ukraine
Andreas Vollmer"It was our weakest performance in the qualification. We could not find a weapon against the Ukrainian game. But we managed to lead, we have to look at what happened, why we ended up losing by ten points. Our game was not at the level of Ukraine, it was not easy. The pause probably also affected us, we lost our concentration, but the same thing happened to Ukraine. Both teams sat for an hour, we can't make excuses for that."
Head coach of Hungary
