Match Report

Estonia first in the current standings in Pool A

Article

Estonia top the charts in the current standings of Pool A after coming from 2 sets down to eventually grab the 3-2 victory vs Belgium. In a clash that lasted 126 minutes, and was a decisive match at the end of the first tournament in Tartu, the Estonian players showed nerves of steel and turned things in their favour. Both teams showed a very balanced game, and it was the more precise play in important moments that helped Estonia to take the 3 points. Turning point was the third set when the players coached by Cedric Enard pushed hard on the attack and with 16 winnings spikes disappointed Belgium. In the remainder of the match, both the Red Dragons led by Sam Deroo (24 points) and Estonia by Oliver Venno (23 points), were fighting for each ball but it was the hosts of Estonia that congratulated themselves with the victory. The second tournament starts on June 4 in Latvia.

- Liam Mc Cluskey and Sam Deroo were on fire in the beginning of the first set, helping Belgium take the lead. Ardo Kreek and his teammates were trying to respond, but with 13 winning spikes the Red Dragons opened.

- Both Belgium and Estonia recorded 4 kill blocks in the second set, but it was once again Belgium who kept calm in the decisive moments.

- In the third set, Estonia started better with Oliver Venno inspiring his teammates on attack. Andri Aganits became the trump card of Estonia's team. Martijn Colson and Sam Deroo helped Belgium to "start breathing again" and get closer to the score, but it was too late, and Albert Hurt took the responsability to bring back the intrigue in the match.

- Both teams were following each other in the score in the next set, but a slightly better performance on attack, helped the Estonians emerge victorious.

- The show in the sports hall in Tartu continued in the last, decisive set. Fighting for each ball, Belgium and Estonia delivered some great rallies, but 4 kill blocks were the key to the final success for the Estonian team.

Tomas Rousseaux, outside-hitter of Belgium: “I think in the end it was a match with good level. The fifth set was very close and then it´s just a matter of couple of smaller things. Estonia finished with an amazing serve on the line, that´s a beautiful end to a beautiful game. Overall was a fun game and it was nice to play it. We are both ambitious and quite young teams with some older guys to support. We are happy to get this experience for the younger players and we are going to the future with a positive mindset.”

Oliver Venno, opposite-hitter of Estonia: “Difficult to say why our game was like it was in the beginning. Maybe the guys were tired, but we didn´t have enough energy. It was nice the guys who came to the court in third set brought some freshness and turned things around.”
