Dominant "Lions" secure Sofia Opening EuroVolleyM Match victory

Bulgaria secured a convincing straight-sets victory at the #EuroVolleyM pool in Sofia, outclassing North Macedonia in front of full stands in Arena 8888. The President of the Bulgarian Republic, Iliyana Yotova, attended the Opening Game, in company of BFV President Lyubomir Ganev, and former Bulgarian Volleyball legends, among whom Teodor Salparov who had a farewell match in the same Arena 8888 last Saturday.
Driven by ten aces and superior attack efficiency throughout the match, the "Lions" overcame brief lapses in concentration to control the game from start to finish.
Aleksandar Nikolov topped the charts with 19 points to his name.
Playing in front of more than 9 000 excited Volleyball fans, Bulgaria opened the match in an electric atmosphere after a traditional gaidari pre-game show and a surprise start for libero Zhasmin Velichkov. Though North Macedonia led early at 5-3, back-to-back aces from Simeon Nikolov sparked a quick comeback to 6-5. Bulgaria never looked back, fueled by top scorers Alex Nikolov and Denislav Bardarov (six points each). The "Lions" controlled the set by outmatching North Macedonia in attack efficiency (55% to 29%) and reception (67% to 44%), while dominance at the service line (4 aces to 0) and net (4 blocks to 0) sealed the opening-set win.
North Macedonia put up a tough fight in the second set, taking an early 7-5 lead and keeping the score locked at 9-9 and 16-16 as Bulgaria suffered a brief lapse in concentration with unforced errors. However, the "Lions" regrouped from a 20-18 position to pull away and seal the set 25-19. Despite North Macedonia improving at the net with four blocks to Bulgaria's zero, Bulgaria's offence proved unstoppable. Led by Aleks Nikolov's eight points, Bulgaria elevated their attack efficiency to 62% (compared to North Macedonia's 53%) and significantly upgraded their positive reception to an impressive 88% (to 39%).
The third set remained tight through the early stages, staying deadlocked at 3-3, 7-7, and 10-10. North Macedonia continued to press, but Bulgaria regrouped down the stretch, sharpening their focus to claim the final set and complete the victory. Overall, the "Lions" dominated the match statistics, outperforming North Macedonia in attack efficiency (58% to 34%), kill blocks (6 to 4), and positive reception (77% to 38%). Their primary weapon was the service line, where Bulgaria delivered a staggering 10 aces while holding North Macedonia to none.
