The floorboards inside Arena 8888 in Sofia carry a different kind of echo this summer. A year removed from taking the world by storm with a historic World Championship silver medal, the Bulgarian men’s national team is preparing to step onto home soil for CEV EuroVolley 2026.
The stage could not be grander, nor could the test be more demanding. Placed in Pool B, Bulgaria welcome Poland, Ukraine, Portugal, North Macedonia, and Israel to their capital for what many already consider the most ruthless of the tournament’s four groups.
Yet for head coach Gianlorenzo Blengini, the rising tide of national expectation isn't a weight to drag along the floor - it’s the ultimate confirmation of progress.

The evolution beyond the podium
That project took critical strides during the recent Volleyball Nations League campaign. While an 8th-place finish left a sting of disappointment after barely missing the Finals on points ratio, the bigger picture revealed a program maturing in real time. Blengini integrated fresh blood, tested tactical variations, and proved that Bulgaria can stand eye-to-eye with anyone on the international circuit - while keeping their feet firmly on the ground.
"The level of competition this year was higher, and we showed we can face any opponent with great self-belief," the Italian strategist explains. "At the same time, we know that any team is capable of putting us in difficulty. We reinforced that awareness during the VNL, where we brought in young guys who were crucial in helping us earn points," Blengini reflects.

For Blengini, the high-stakes environment of Pool B leaves no room for distant daydreaming.
"Young or not young, the most important thing is the quality a player brings to the court and offers to the team," he notes firmly. "We know we have a very tough group, perhaps the hardest in the entire tournament, but in long competitions, it is useless to focus on the end goal. You have to focus match by match, day by day. Prepare as best as possible daily, and face each day with humility and intense focus."

If Blengini provides the tactical compass, the heart of this evolving squad beats through players like Denislav Bardarov. The rising star's breakout VNL performance was more than just a statistical success - it was the realisation of a childhood dream forged watching the national team from the stands.

The memories of where it all began remain crystal clear for the young hitter.
"As a child, this was the absolute peak of sports for me," Bardarov states.

A bond forged for the Big Stage
With the national team camp underway, the focus has shifted from high-level VNL lessons to the fine, microscopic details that separate podium contenders from the rest of the field. Yet beyond the tactical chalkboards and blocking drills, Bardarov sees a deeper chemistry solidifying inside the locker room.
"The VNL showed us exactly what we need to polish during camp and which small details we can elevate," Bardarov says. "Our team spirit is at a very high level - every single one of the boys has that hunger to win and achieve great things. The bond in the team is building, and it’s coming together naturally. Day by day, we are getting to know each other better on and off the court. At EuroVolley, we want to bring out our absolute best and give the fans on home soil something truly special to celebrate."
As Sofia prepares to open its doors to Europe's finest, the narrative around Bulgarian Volleyball has clearly shifted. The silver medals of yesterday have set the foundation; the raw hunger of today is what will drive them step by step through Pool B.
