The 2022 Beach Volleyball season – at least in Europe – will officially get underway with two Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Futures due to take place in Spanish capital Madrid from May 12-15 and 19-22 for men and women, respectively. As a result, an international Beach Volleyball event will return to the state-of-the-art Puerta de Hierro Beach Volleyball centre after last September the very same venue played host to a women’s-only 1-Star World Tour tournament.

Local authorities and Volleyball officials are all equally looking forward to the return of Beach Volleyball competition to Madrid

Sofia Miranda, Sports Councillor of the City of Madrid, and Alberto Tomé, Sports Vice-Councillor of the Madrid Community, Agustín Martín Santos, President of the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation (RFEVB) and Felipe Pascual, President of the Madrid Volleyball Federation (FMVB), addressed a number of media earlier this week to reveal their plans for the eagerly anticipated competition.

Mr Pascual highlighted and praised the great support provided by local authorities as well as by the RFEVB, which make it possible for Madrid to host an international Beach Volleyball competition for the second straight year. Back in 2021, Madrid played host to a Round 2 event scheduled for the Olympic-qualifying CEV Continental Cup and to a women’s-only 1-Star World Tour competition.  This time, men and women will be playing in Madrid on consecutive weeks – and Mr Pascual expressed his hopes for more Spanish success on home sand after Belén Carro and Paula Soria claimed gold in 2021 much to the delight of the local crowd.

Mr Martín Santos was delighted with the return of the international circuit to the capital, highlighting

“the Olympic vocation of Madrid and its commitment to sports, with many efforts made to bring major international competitions back to the Spanish capital.”

Alberto Tomé congratulated the FMVB for making Volleyball and Beach Volleyball a popular sport and activity among the people of Madrid. “With their efforts, sports and tourism can go hand in hand again. This helps make our region more popular and achieve a very important economic and financial return.”

Finally, Sofia Miranda expressed her enthusiasm with the return of elite sport to Madrid, which plays a leading role in spreading key values such as resilience, empathy and mutual understanding across the local society as a whole.
