The trucks, the grandstands, and the sudden, deep sand patches have completely transformed the quiet pathways of Városliget. Right in the heart of Budapest’s City Park, the CEV Beach Volley Nations Cup Final has come alive, and with it, the undeniable, heavy hum of home-crowd expectation.

For the local fans gathering under the summer sun, they wanted a fight. The Hungarians  gave them a masterclass.

The Hungarian teams stepped onto the sand and tore through a dangerous Turkish side, securing a clinical 2-0 victory on the Opening Day. But the real litmus test came against the Netherlands - a global beach volleyball powerhouse. Instead of folding under the weight of the Dutch stature, the Hungarians went blow-for-blow, and despite the 0-2 loss, they proved, without a shadow of a doubt, that they belong in this sandbox. On Day 2, Hungary gave their best on the sand as well, finishing Pool B in third place and face the tough team of Latvia in the quarter-final.

Yet, playing as the definitive face of a home tournament is a psychological tightrope. Step onto center court, and you are instantly surrounded by the people who know you best.

This is how Artúr Hajós and Lukas Niemeier live the tournament.

"I would say it is pure fuel," Artúr Hajós smiles, wiping a mix of sweat and sand from his forehead in the mixed zone. For him, the grandstands aren't a wall of judgmental eyes; quite the opposite. "We really enjoyed it, and it is the best feeling that we can play at home. My family is here, my girlfriend is here, my high school friends are here. Seeing those familiar faces on the stand gives me pure joy and happiness. It gives us so much energy, and I know that we can win this together."

That emotional anchor is exactly what Hungary needs as they navigate a tournament crawling with Olympic contenders and European giants. On paper, they wear the underdog tag. In practice, they are treating it like a shield.

"As underdogs, there is no pressure," Lukas Niemeier explains, his focus already shifting to the upcoming matches. "We just try to recompose our game."

"We are super pumped to perform well, and honestly? I think the pressure is all on the opponents now."

"The crowd is amazing, they are completely behind us, and we hope they will make it possible for us to seize as many victories as possible," Lukas added.

When you are young, playing on home soil, and matching the giants stride for stride, it’s impossible not to dream a little. When asked to script the ultimate, textbook miracle on the Városliget sand, Hajós doesn't hesitate. He doesn't play it safe with taking it one match at a time.

"The miracle match? Obviously, I would say the final and pulling off the win," Hajós says, a spark in his eye. "Advancing to the final and winning it - that would be a dream come true."

And the perfect opponent for a movie-script ending? "I would love to play against the Italians because they are good friends of mine. At home, in our country, it would be really fun. I like how they play, so that would be an incredible battle."

"I hope that a lot of people who are not even familiar with beach volleyball are getting inspired right now," Niemeier says, gesturing out toward the bustling venue. "They are coming here, watching the games, seeing how amazing it is to watch us play, and maybe they'll even try it themselves in the future. We just want the sport to grow even more in Hungary, and we hope this brings a lot more people into our community."

As they prepare to keep on showing their best game in Budapest, Hajós looks out past the courts to the kid lining the fences.

"A message to the next generation? One day, you can become players like us - or even better, hopefully," Hajós says. "You can have the exact same feeling that we have right now."

"Don't give up on your dreams. Keep pushing, keep working hard, and in a few years, this could be you standing right here."
