CV Tenerife LA LAGUNA of Spain and Savino Del Bene SCANDICCI of Italy have reached the final stage of the women’s CEV Challenge Cup 2022. They have done so after recording back-to-back wins in their semi-final matches with Tent OBRENOVAC (Serbia) and AYDIN BBSK (Turkey), respectively.

The players of CV Tenerife LA LAGUNA erupt in joy to celebrate their qualification to the Challenge Cup final

CV Tenerife LA LAGUNA achieved a truly historic feat and they did so by dropping only one set in their two matches with Tent OBRENOVAC. The return match on home soil was probably the most important fixture in the club’s history and the hosts set the pace from the very beginning (7-4, 17-13) before claiming a closely fought opening set (25-22) with the help of their setter and team captain Patricia Aranda.

LA LAGUNA came out with all guns blazing in the second set (6-2) but the Serbians fought back and closed the gap at 15-14 with much contribution coming from Sara Carić. Belly Nsungimina helped LA LAGUNA stand the challenge and by taking the second set 25-16, the Spaniards made sure that they would contest the Challenge Cup final. Despite this, the home side did not lose focus and they played with much quality in the third set as well (13-8). They eventually wrapped up a comprehensive 3-0 victory with another 25-16 score to write a piece of history for Spanish Volleyball.

Italy's Savino Del Bene SCANDICCI will be making their first appearance in a European final as well

In the other semi-final, Italian standout Savino Del Bene SCANDICCI needed three sets only as well to have the upper hand against AYDIN BBSK of Turkey. The Italian team did so after recording a 3-2 away victory last week, this time with Ekaterina Antropova scoring as many as 23 points – to respond to the 17 marked by Greta Szakmary for the Turks. SCANDICCI have reached their first European final in history after their three straight appearances in the elite CEV Champions League where they made it as far as to the quarterfinals.
