This past January 26-28, the popular ski resort of Tsakhkadzor did play host to the Armenian Snow Volleyball national championships with participation of eight men’s and as many as 10 women’s teams. The Volleyball Federation of Armenia (VFA) has been holding this event annually since 2015 and every year the level of the actions witnessed by coaches and fans alike is getting higher, thus accounting for interesting and highly entertaining matches. At the same time, the VFA is trying to involve younger teams and players as well to grow the next generation of Snow Volleyball players.

Young players were the driving force at the event held in Tsakhkhadzor

The VFA has a truly remarkable experience in the delivery of Snow Volleyball competitions. Back in early 2020, Armenia did also play host to a stop of the CEV Snow Volleyball European Tour, where the Armenian women’s team claimed a historic bronze medal. In the same year, a EEVZA Snow Volleyball competition was held in Tsakhkadzor as well, where the home men’s team emerged as the eventual champions, whereas the women’s teams finished in second and third place.

This is testament to the VFA’s strong desire to further develop and popularise this sport. This year, beautiful winter conditions provided for an ideal backdrop for the national championships. It is especially gratifying for the organisers that mostly young athletes such as those representing Van, Avan, Gegashen, and Fima, all aged between 14 and 19, did deliver a very good performance.

Team Van claimed the women’s title, with Team Soft and Team Fima completing the podium. “The three players composing Team Van are all aged between 15-17, and our girls are already playing high-quality Volleyball, which is very encouraging,” said VFA Secretary General Karen Asmaryan. In the men’s competition, the younger Team Fima-2 defeated their friends from Fima-1 in the final and BKMA claimed the third place.

The VFA will hold the U20 National Snow Volleyball Championships later this week at the Beach Volleyball Academy in Arzni.
