EuroVolley in Göteborg is now a Certified Sustainable Event

EuroVolley in Göteborg has implemented a range of measures to achieve the certification. For example, every volunteer receives a reusable water bottle to reduce the use of single-use bottles. Volunteers and officials are also provided with free public transport through Västtrafik on the days they work. The coffee is KRAV-certified, while food waste must be minimised and surplus food put to use. The certification is based on more than 100 criteria covering everything from transport and food waste to climate impact and gender equality.

He also highlights the contribution made by CEV officials in Göteborg, who are using public transport during the championship.
“I am also very proud that this is the first time in Europe that a volleyball competition has received this certification. It means a lot to CEV, not least because we support efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions around the world. This is important for all of us, not only in Europe.”
Officials and other official representatives are offered free transport by tram or electric car to and from Scandinavium and their assignments. According to Sikirić, this is the first time in European volleyball that officials at a championship of this level are using trams instead of cars as part of the event’s sustainability efforts.
The certification is issued by the Swedish organisation Greentime, which has previously certified events including the Gothia Cup and the World Handball Championships.
To receive the certification, organisers must meet 41 mandatory requirements and achieve at least 70 per cent of the total possible score. The criteria cover climate and environmental issues as well as social sustainability.
During EuroVolley, measures include replacing single-use bottles with water stations, measuring food waste and donating surplus food. Volunteers receive free public transport, red meat is excluded, and gender equality is also included among the criteria.
Final approval of the certification follows an independent on-site audit during the championship. Auditor Peter Reelfs, working on behalf of the certification organisation, was at Scandinavium on Monday to carry out a final inspection.
“They meet all the criteria during the inspection,” says Peter Reelfs.
