Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will be playing host to the pool stage of the CEV EuroVolley 2028 Women – in a move that connects a well-known hub for women’s Volleyball with tourism and a history-making moment for the Spanish Volleyball family at large. Never before has a ‘senior’ European Championship taken place on Spanish soil. Back in 2023, Spain reached the 8th Finals of the CEV EuroVolley where they lost to powerhouse Italy and most recently competed in the revamped CEV Volleyball European League, securing a respectable sixth place with five wins in their six League Round matches.

The iconic city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria will welcome the CEV EuroVolley Women pool phase in 2028

“With this decision, we are literally breaking new ground for both European and Spanish Volleyball – since the continental championship of our sport has never taken place in Spain since its introduction in the late 1940s. It is especially fitting that the event will be held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, thereby capitalising on the rich and extensive Volleyball history of the Canary Islands – which have been home to a variety of much decorated clubs and represent a key hub for the continued growth and development of Spanish Volleyball,” says CEV President Roko Sikirić.  “I am confident that through the cooperation of all parties involved, the CEV EuroVolley 2028 will help us raise the appeal and popularity of women’s Volleyball not only in Spain – but across the whole of Europe and even further beyond too, while leaving also a lasting legacy for generations to come,” he continues.

“The CEV EuroVolley 2028 Women in Spain will be a historic event for all of our fans. In fact, its importance goes beyond Volleyball, as it is the biggest women’s sporting event to take place in Spain over the next four years,” says Felipe Pascual, President of the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation, with much pride. “The unanimous support from all government administrations showcases their strong association with women’s sports, and especially with Volleyball just when it has reached record-breaking numbers of participation. The women's national team is enjoying an amazing run and this kind of effort is key to their performance and visibility amongst a growing number of supporters.”

Team Spain recently performed well in the revamped CEV Volleyball European League claiming five wins in six matches

As co-hosts, Spain are automatically qualified for the CEV EuroVolley 2028 Women – together with the top four teams from this year’s European League, namely Sweden, Slovenia, Hungary, and Slovakia. Since the 2019 edition, the CEV EuroVolley has featured 24 participating teams and taken place across four co-host countries. The CEV is currently liaising with other National Federations interested in hosting this major event and further announcements will be made in due course. The winners of the 2026 edition scheduled for later this summer will also secure their participation in the CEV EuroVolley 2028. Four more teams will qualify via the European League 2027, thereby joining Spain and the three remaining host countries still to be confirmed. The remaining available spots will go to the highest ranked teams not yet qualified as per the European ranking taken following completion of the 2027 VNL and European League.
