Poland kick off EuroVolley with comprehensive Portugal sweep, Ukraine with a hard-fought one over Israel
Recap
Poland launched the defence of their CEV Enel EuroVolley Men crown in flawless fashion, sweeping Portugal 3-0 (25-12, 25-18, 25-20) in Sofia with an authoritative performance from start to finish. The reigning champions asserted their dominance early, dismantling Portugal’s defence through relentless attack efficiency and capitalising on a flurry of Portuguese errors to ensure an emphatically comfortable start to their tournament campaign.
Poland took early control of the set with relentless excellence in attack, hitting at a high-flying 56% efficiency compared to Portugal's modest 35%. Sharp execution and clean distribution carried Poland to an 8-6 lead before they stretched it to 10-6, forcing an early Portuguese timeout. Portugal struggled to organise their blocking system against Poland's varied offence led by Wilfredo León, who paced the stat sheet with 4 points - and saw the gap widen to 15-8 and 21-11. Portugal's self-inflicted damage made any comeback impossible, giving away 10 unforced errors in the set (including crucial service mistakes) to Poland's tidy four, allowing the Polish side to comfortably wrap up a dominant opening frame.
In the second set, Portugal put up a much tighter fight early on, trading blows to level the score at 8-8 and eventually pushing ahead 12-11 to force a Polish timeout. Poland quickly gathered themselves out of the break to reclaim a 15-13 lead, while Portugal's concentration slipped once again during the closing stretch as Poland pulled away to 21-17. Reception levels dipped for both sides - Poland down to 50% positive passing and Portugal falling to 37% - and Portugal's net defense came alive with a 3-to-1 blocking advantage. However, Portugal ultimately proved to be their own worst enemy for a second straight frame; despite Poland conceding 7 errors of their own, Portugal handed over another 10 unforced errors to give Poland full control down the stretch.
Poland maintained complete control through the third set to seal the victory, despite a slightly more disciplined effort from Portugal, who reduced their unforced errors to 7. Portugal simply couldn't overcome Poland's across-the-board dominance: the Polish squad out-blocked Portugal 7 to 6, maintained a superior 55% to 38% attack efficiency, and held a firm edge in positive reception (54% to 42%) in total. Pacing the offensive effort in the final stretch, Bartłomiej Bołądz topped the scoring charts with 9 points to close out a comprehensive sweep.
Aleksander Sliwka"We are glad that we won-that was our goal. We were focused from the very beginning of the game and maintained it throughout. As team captain, I'm proud of what we achieved, and we are fully focused on the next steps. Our goals are very high, but we don't want to get ahead of ourselves. Our focus is simply on winning the next game against Israel and taking every necessary step to reach the top."
Captain of Poland
Alexandre Ferreira“It was very tough. But on the positive side, it was a good benchmark for us to see where our level is and where we can improve. We started all the sets well, but towards the end, when they put us under pressure, we broke down a bit too easily. We will take the same approach into the match against Bulgaria. Our mindset remains unchanged. We will play to win, focus on the victory, and work on improving our game for the upcoming matches that will be closer to our level."

In their eight appearance at CEV EuroVolley Men, Ukraine secured a hard-fought 3-1 victory (25-22, 25-19, 22-25, 25-19) over Israel to open their campaign at the #EuroVolleyM. Demonstrating mental resilience and superior net defence, the Ukrainian squad fended off a third-set resurgence from Israel to seal a crucial opening-match triumph in Sofia.
Israel grabbed the early momentum to surge ahead 6-2 and 9-4, but Ukraine steadily chipped away at the deficit until leveling the score at 13-13. The teams traded blows in a tight back-and-forth battle up to 21-21 before Ukraine executed a decisive late push to reach 23-21 and ultimately claim the opening frame. Ukraine's comeback was fueled by outstanding backline efficiency, passing at a staggering 81% positive reception compared to Israel's 25%, while out-attacking Israel 55% to 45% in execution down the stretch.
The second set developed into a gritty, point-for-point mental resilience battle, with Ukraine holding a slim 11-9 lead before Israel kept the pressure on through tight exchanges at 16-17 and 18-19. Despite Israel elevating their offensive execution to 54% compared to Ukraine's dropped 42% attack efficiency, Ukraine ultimately prevailed down the stretch thanks to their continuous backline stability, maintaining a solid 55% positive reception to Israel's 33%.
After deadlocks at 4-4, 5-5, and 7-7, Israel broke away to a 10-8 advantage behind strong, aggressive serving. Controlling the tempo and delivering in key moments, the Israeli squad re-injected intrigue into the match by taking the third frame with a stellar 53% attack efficiency compared to Ukraine's 41%.
The fourth set saw Ukraine quickly regain command, leading for nearly the entire frame to close out a 3-1 victory. Overall, Ukraine's net defence and service pressure proved decisive, out-blocking Israel 12 to 5 and landing 5 aces to 2. Israel actually finished with a slightly higher attack percentage (50% to 47%), but Ukraine's physical blocking and unforced-error control sealed the deal, led by top scorer Dmytro Yanchuk's match-high 18 points.
Yurii Semeniuk“We're happy because we won. Okay, we didn’t win 3-0, but 3-1 is still a good result. Sometimes we let too many mistakes, sometimes several in a row. But after the third set, we tried to stay focused. We talked about what we needed to change and then played our game. Every day we analyse the team we are going to play against. We need to check them, talk with the coach, and prepare our tactics. It doesn't matter who is on the other side of the court. We just need to play our Volleyball.”

Shay Mayo Liberman“It was a very tough game for us. We are happy with our performance. I think it was better in the first part of the match. We just hope we will be better in the next game and we will keep our head high for the next one. Our main goal at the moment is to reach the next phase. We are starting each game with trust in ourselves and we really want to get around the 1/8’s.”
