Romania stun Ukraine in straight sets to lock up quarterfinal spot

Romania produced a masterclass in resilience and baseline pressure at Arena 8888 Sofia on Sunday, sweeping regional rivals Ukraine in straight sets (25-22, 25-21, 30-28) to book their place in the CEV Enel EuroVolley 2026 Men quarterfinals. Spearheaded by a 16-point performance from opposite Alexandru Rață and decisive service runs from Daniel Chițigoi, Sergiu Stancu’s squad punished 28 Ukrainian unforced errors to cap off a flawless Round of 16 display. The victory marked a historic breakthrough in the first-ever EuroVolley encounter between the two nations, snapping a six-match losing streak for Romania against Ukraine in competitive play. While Ukraine entered the clash having won two of their previous three Round of 16 appearances at the European Championship, Romania made the most of just their second journey to this stage-following their 2023 breakthrough in Varna where they edged Croatia 3-2. By securing back-to-back quarterfinal berths, Romania continues to build on a resurgence that saw them advance past the initial group stage in 2023 for the first time since 1981. 

Ukraine vs Romania 0-3 (22-25, 21-25, 28-30)

Ukraine opened the match with a slight edge through 3-2 and 7-6, but Romania established early defensive control behind strong block-defense transition to stay within striking distance at 8-11. Ukraine targeted the central channel to score for 11-9 as Dmytro Yanchuk began to find his rhythm, but Romania’s front line responded with disciplined blocking to surge ahead 14-11, prompting a timeout from Ukrainian head coach Raúl Lozano.

Oleh Plotnytskyi came up big out of the pause to spark a Ukrainian rally, bringing the score level at 15-15 before Ukraine’s floor defence capitalised to flip the lead to 16-15. A tight point-for-point battle ensued through 18-17 in Romania's favour. Daniel Chițigoi then delivered a crucial baseline ace to extend Romania’s cushion to 22-19. Ukraine fought back, behind a service ace from Yurii Semeniuk to close the gap to 21-22 and pressing to 22-24, but Romania held their composure down the stretch to close out the opening set 25-22.

Statistical edge in the opening set favoured Romania’s execution, as they held a slight 48% to 47% advantage in attack execution and controlled the net with three kill blocks to one. Baseline discipline also proved decisive, with Ukraine surrendering five unforced errors compared to just three for Romania.

The tight, nerve-wracking battle continued early in the second set as Ukraine held a narrow 11-9 advantage, before Romania pulled level at 12-12. The teams traded leads at 13-12 and 14-13 in Ukraine’s favour, remaining deadlocked through 15-15. Romania then took control at 18-17 by sharpening their tool-the-block play, cleverly forcing Ukrainian touches at the net to draw off-block errors.

Ukraine continued to press, but Daniel Chițigoi broke the frame open with back-to-back service aces to push Romania ahead 21-18, forcing a timeout from Raúl Lozano. Out of the break, Ștefan Lupu delivered a stellar sequence in the middle with a sharp quick-attack for 22-19 followed by a service ace for 23-19. Romania kept their foot on the gas to seal the second set 25-19 and take a commanding 2-0 lead in the match.

Romania maintained the offensive upper hand in Set 2, out-attacking Ukraine 50% to 44% in execution. While Ukraine led the net battle with four kill blocks to one, Romania dominated from the baseline with two aces to none and benefited from better discipline, with Ukraine committing seven unforced errors to Romania’s six.

Ukraine took an early 2-1 and 6-4 lead in the third set, but Romania quickly turned the tables to go up 9-7. A monster block from the Romanian front line brought the score to 13-13, setting up a nail-biting, point-for-point finish. Ukraine had their opportunities to extend the match, but Romania proved more resilient in the clutch, grinding out the final points to complete a straight-sets sweep.

Overall, Romania controlled the offensive tempo with a 47% to 45% advantage in attack execution, alongside a seven to four edge in service aces. Although Ukraine held superior numbers in positive reception (53% to 44%) and total kill blocks (8 to 6), their rhythm was repeatedly derailed by unforced mistakes, surrendering 28 errors to Romania’s 20.

Alexandru Rață spearheaded the Romanian offense as the match’s top scorer, finishing with 16 points on a 55% attack execution. For Ukraine, team captain Oleh Plotnytskyi led the way with 15 points (52% attack execution, two kill blocks, and one ace).
