The home side literally dominated the first set, before CV GRAN CANARIA managed to put up more of a fight in the subsequent ones, taking the third, but losing the fourth as well as the Golden Set. The Spaniards played with much courage and determination against a great team, but they fell short from repeating the same performance they had shown on home soil.
The first set was very much one-sided (25-12), and this obviously provided the players coached by Maciej Biernat with an extra boost of confidence. CV GRAN CANARIA adjusted some aspects of their game, and the two teams exchanged the lead back and forth for most of the second set. However, the Poles had more power in the final stages (25-21) and eventually doubled their lead in the match. CV GRAN CANARIA, far from feeling intimidated, continued to battle in the third set, where they broke away to 20-16 before sealing it at 25-20. This meant that the Spaniards were still in contention – and they were hoping to carry that momentum into the fourth set. However, they could not quite do so, and lost it 16-25 – so a Golden Set would decide the eventual winner of this double header. With a 4-0 opening run, Maciej Biernat’s girls set the tone there as well before wrapping it up at 15-9 – but despite the loss, CV GRAN CANARIA can leave the European arena for this season with their heads held high.
