Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA keep their perfect record in the current season with 12 victories in as many matches contested this far by the team coached by the legendary Lorenzo Bernardi. Due to a very tough matchup against Allianz Vero Volley MILANO coming up in the Italian league, the club travelled to their Challenge Cup fixture with RANDABERG IL of Norway without some of their key players. Despite this, the winners of this year’s WEVZA Cup cruised to a commanding 3-0 victory (25-16, 25-16, 25-16).
Valentina Bartolucci“We achieved our goal, which was a three-set victory. That is the best possible start in a two-leg match and now we look forward to playing the return game next week in Novara: making it to the next round is crucial for us and we will stay focused and determined.”
Around 500 spectators, including several local and national authorities, attended the game, which was a real celebration for the whole Norwegian Volleyball family. Hungary’s Gréta Szakmary, who was appointed for the first time ever captain of the Italian team, was awarded as the Most Valuable Player of the game due to an outstanding attacking performance, with a 74% success rate and no mistakes at all. On the other side of the net, Wilde Jakobsen Johansen was the top scorer for RANDABERG IL with 16 points.
With this result, Igor Gorgonzola have improved their all-time record of consecutive wins to 12 (it previously stood at 11) and Lorenzo Bernardi’s team has performed the best start to any season in their history: it never happened before that the club from Novara could win more than nine matches in a row in the early stages of a season. Zoe Moiran, only 17 years old, made her first-team debut and played her first ever European Cups game: she celebrated the occasion with a great serving performance, scoring as many as five aces.
Ludovica Guidi“We did a good job, leading the game from the first rally to the last one, playing good Volleyball and showing our best. We cannot wait to play the next game: we want to secure a spot in the 8th Finals and continue our Challenge Cup campaign.”
