Isabelle Haak and her Sweden did their job right against Azerbaijan in Tournament 6 of the League Round of the 2024 Golden EuroLeague Women. The Swedes outperformed their Saturday opponents at 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-19), recording a second win in the competition before the important Sunday matchup against Romania.

Sweden needed exactly 83 minutes to secure the positive outcome, showing domination in all the three sets.

The players under the guidance of Cesare Bregoli performed strong from the serving line, finishing with six aces (to two), and delivered good results in attack (45 to 30 winning spikes, 42% exc. to 28% exc.). Azerbaijan tried their best on blocking (six), but even on this element, it was the Swedish team who was leading, recording as many as eight kill blocks. However, Sweden let their opponents record more points on their own mistakes: 16 to 13.

Isabelle Haak topped the charts with 16pts. (39% exc. in attack), while her sister - Anna, finished with 15pts. (48% exc. in attack).

For Azerbaijan, Anastasiia Mertsalova finished as best scorer - 11pts. (33% exc. in attack).

Sweden 3-0 Azerbaijan

The beginning of the first set set the tone for an exciting game ahead as the two sides started following each other in the score (8-8). Despite the Swedes’ attempts to build a point difference (13-10), the Azeris were breathing down their necks (17-17). With Anna Haak on the serve, Sweden could take control (22-17), and eventually emerge victorious.

The two teams were following each other in the second set as well (14-14) but approaching the deciding moments of the set, Sweden showed concentration and got closer to the victory thanks to a great team play.

The Swedish players took the lead in the third set (8-4) and never looked back (15-10). Azerbaijan tried to tie the things, but it was too late for a turnaround.

“An important win today. Not our best performance, we have to work and fix some things, but it is three points. The match against Romania tomorrow will be difficult, we have to keep high our level of serving - we did good on this element today.”

Cesare Bregoli
Head coach of Sweden
