Austria and Spain complete the men’s semifinals

Austria and Spain overcame the quarterfinal round of the 2025 CEV Beach Volley Nations Cup Finals on Saturday in Espinho and will join pool winners Norway and the Netherlands in the last day of the tournament on Sunday.

Austrians and Spanish finished second in their pools and had to compete in the quarterfinals to continue to move forward at the Praia da Baía on Saturday. The semifinals will take place on Sunday, with Austria playing the Netherlands at 9:30 and 10:30 local time and Spain meeting Norway at 12:00 and 13:00. The final will also be held on Sunday.

The second-best national team in Pool B, Austria faced Lithuania in the quarterfinals and secured a pair of wins to advance. Julian Hörl and Philipp Waller scored the first point for the Austrians in the series by taking Robert Juchnevic and Artur Vasiljev down in the tie-breaker (18-21, 21-18, 15-9), and Tim Berger and Timo Hammarberg followed up on it with a sweep (21-15, 21-14) against Arnas Rumsevicius and Karolis Palubinskas.

A few hours later, Spain, which were second in Pool A, followed a similar path to beat hosts Portugal and triumph in the Iberian Derby. The Spanish started strong, with Álvaro Viera and Antonio Saucedo sweeping (21-17, 21-14) the brothers Gonçalo and Tomas Sousa, and then saw the Huerta brothers Alejandro and Javier beat Hugo Campos and João Pedrosa 2-1 (20-22, 21-19, 15-11) to confirm their victory.

Spain got the better of hosts Portugal to advance

Introduced in the European beach volleyball calendar in 2022, the Beach Nations Cup is an exciting ‘country vs country’ competition which resembles the Davis Cup in tennis.
