The European Beach Volleyball elite will be coming together from June 27 to July 1 in Luxembourg with the second edition of the Queen & King of the Court European Finals accounting for a truly unprecedented sporting highlight in the Grand Duchy! Both reigning European champions from Munich 2022, Sweden’s sensation David Åhman/Jonatan Hellvig and Latvia’s Tina Graudina/Anastasija Samoilova will be contesting the event at d’Coque – so fans from across the Grand Duchy and the ‘Grande Région’ can already look forward to an event of the finest calibre!

The event in Luxembourg follows on last year's successful premiere in Utrecht (NED)

Last year, Swedish youngsters Åhman/Hellvig were responsible for a major sensation at the Munich 2022 European Championships when they beat reigning Olympic, World and European champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum in an all-Scandinavian semi-final. The Swedes did not stop there as they cruised past Czechs David Schweiner and Ondrej Perusic to crown themselves European champions. Their meteoric rise to the top of the international Beach Volleyball elite continued shortly afterwards when they finished second only to Mol/Sørum at the inaugural Queen & King of the Court European Finals in Utrecht.

You can be sure that David and Jonatan will be coming to Luxembourg to display their unconventional way of playing Beach Volleyball and to seize the crown at the end of a tournament played as per the innovative, highly energetic, and dynamic format known as ‘Queen & King of the Court’! However, the Swedes can expect some tough opposition from the likes of Perusic/Schweiner, or last year’s third-place finishers in Utrecht, Kusti Nõlvak and Mart Tiisaar of Estonia.

Young Swedish aces Ahman/Hellvig will be vying for the men's crown in Luxembourg

The list of Beach Volleyball superstars coming to Luxembourg is long and truly impressive, since it includes the likes of 2013 world champions and Rio 2016 bronze medal winners Alexander Brouwer and Robert Meeuwsen of the Netherlands, Rio 2016 Olympic silver medallist Daniele Lupo of Italy, as well as the experienced Latvians Janis Smedins and Aleksandrs Samoilovs – European champions in 2015.

Twenty teams – with three making it through the preceding qualification round – will contest the Main Draw. These include Maciek Complak and Felix Terwindt of Luxembourg, who will measure themselves up against the continental elite in the sport.

Reigning European champions Graudina/Samoilova head the entry lists for the women's competition

The women’s entries are just equally as impressive and apart from the reigning European champions from Latvia, they also feature Olympic champion and former World and European champion Laura Ludwig of Germany, who is returning to the court after a second maternity leave and now plays alongside the former star of the German Volleyball national team, Louisa Lippmann. Last year’s bronze medallists from the World Championship, Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann of Germany are due to compete in Luxembourg as well – as are the third-place finishers of last year’s Queen and King of the Court European Finals, Slovenia’s Tjaša Kotnik and Tajda Lovsin. Another German, Karla Borger, crowned herself ‘Queen of the Court’ last year in Utrecht with Chantal Laboureur, who has since retired from competitive sport – so Borger will be vying for more ‘regalia’ with her current partner Sandra Ittlinger. The duo comprising of Eline Delcourt and Rebekka Klerf will be representing Luxembourg in the women’s competition and is already among the 20 duos due to contest the Main Draw.

With so many of Europe’s top players and teams making the journey to the Grand Duchy, fans can expect a competition of the finest level at d’Coque – for an event which marks, among other things, the 50th anniversary of the CEV as well as the 60 years since the establishment of the Luxembourg Volleyball Federation.
