The Dutch national anthem was played twice at the Lorca International Beach Volleyball Centre (CIVP) on Sunday. After a tough fight, the Dutch teams managed to win the gold medal in both categories at the WEVZA U20 Beach Volleyball Championships, which counted as a zonal qualifier for this year’s #EuroBeachVolleyU20 as well.

In the women’s division, Nigella Negenman/Esmee Radstake had to work hard to overcome an excellent first set from Germany’s Sophia Neuss/Clara Dressen and claim a hard-fought victory. Previously, and surprisingly, Italy’s Carola Tesoro/Asia Aliotta lost the bronze medal match to Belgium’s Lotte De Clercq/Lola Bombeke, in a match that needed a 24-22 third set to decide the winners.

The boys, for their part, followed a similar path, although this time the Italians Matteo Iurisci/Gabriel Marini Da Costa made things so difficult for their opponents in the second set that the knowledgeable crowd at the CIVP put all their bets on the Azzurri. However, their bets were unsuccessful, as the Dutch team Tom Sonneville/Bram van der Wel demonstrated in the third set a level of proficiency that left no room for doubt, against an exhausted Italian team that was unable to finish the job in their favour. The bronze went to the Andrea Sanguanini/Matteo Marchesan team from Italy – who edged Switzerland’s Daniel Allemann and Livio Friedli in the ‘small final’.

The top two National Federations in each gender – the Netherlands and Germany for women, the Netherlands and Italy for men – secured their spot at this year’s #EuroBeachVolleyU20.

It was an excellent weekend at the CIVP in Lorca, and an excellent way to celebrate the spirit of brotherhood among all the teams, who will meet again later this summer in Madrid at the European Championships in this category, where Spain hopes to play a far greater role.
