Teams from hosts France, Spain and Austria delivered strong performances at this week’s Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour Futures event held in Montpellier, combining to win five of the six medals in play at the popular Montpellier Beach Volley Club, located at Parc de La Rauze, over the weekend.
With two golds, two silvers and one bronze, the duos from the continent dominated the event, producing another successful weekend for European duos in the Futures events held in the region.
French fans who followed the tournament in Montpellier were able to celebrate the victory of a home team as top-seeded Elouan Chouikh-Barbez and Joadel Gardoque downed Austrian Olympians Robin Seidl and Alexander Huber in the three-set (16-21, 22-20, 15-12) gold medal match in Montpellier.
Beach Pro Tour Montpellier Futures – Men
The all-European men’s podium in the French event was completed by Spanish Álvaro Viera and Antonio Saucedo, who prevailed over Austrians Felix Friedl and Florian Schnetzer in straight sets (21-16, 21-13) in the bronze medal match.
Spanish win gold among the women
The women’s gold medal match in Montpellier also featured a home team, but the winners were Spanish Sofía Izuzquiza and Sofía González, who came out on top after three sets (21-17, 14-21, 15-9) to upset Elsa Descamps and Anouk Dupin, securing their first title together – they took bronze in Kraków last month.
Beach Pro Tour Montpellier Futures – Women
American qualifiers Alexis Durish and Audrey Koenig made it to the podium in third place after they defeated Czechs Martina Maixnerova and Kylie Neuschaeferova in two sets (21-16, 21-14) in the bronze medal match.
The next Beach Pro Tour Futures event in Europe will take place in three weeks, from July 18-21, in Leuven, Belgium.
The Beach Pro Tour Futures events in Europe are run by the CEV in close cooperation with Volleyball World and provide teams from the continent with several opportunities to compete and gain valuable international ranking points.
