Germans and Greek take gold in Corigliano Rossano
U18 European Championship
Germany and Greece triumphed in the last Age Group European Championship of the year, taking gold in the men’s and women’s tournaments, respectively, of the U18 EuroBeachVolley, which came to an end on Sunday in Corigliano Rossano, Italy.
The five-day event at the Schiavonea featured duos from as many as 31 different countries on the continent, and had teams from Germany, Greece, Ukraine, hosts Italy and Belgium on the podium.
The men’s winners were 17-year-old Jonathan Bungert, who had taken silver last year, and 16-year-old Filo Wüst, who took Germany to the top of the podium with a straight-set (23-21, 21-17) victory over Ukrainians Yehor Skrypnychenko and Andrii Lunkan in the gold medal match.
U18 CEV European Championship – Men
Marco Di Felice and Riccardo Santomassimo took hosts Italy to the podium by taking bronze after they produced a two-set (21-18, 22-20) victory over Estonians Patrik Parijõgi and Armin Kender in the third-place match in Corigliano Rossano.
Germany also contended for the women’s title in Italy, but Anna-Chiara Reformat, who had won bronze last year, and Rika Dieckmann were stopped by the Greek duo formed by 17-year-old Myrto Paschalaki and 15-year-old Eleni Alexoglou, who claimed gold with a two-set (23-21, 21-17) victory.
U18 CEV European Championship – Women
Making it to the podium in third place were Belgians Lente Thant and Simone Vervloet, who earned their spots after they took French Joséphine Candela and Ally Ozanne Pian down with a sweep (21-18, 21-14) in the bronze medal match.
