An iconic venue set up at Syntagma square in Athens played host earlier this month to the first tournament of this year’s Panhellenic Beach Volleyball Championship. With a crowd of more than 900 spectators in attendance, the event coincided with the second time in Greek Beach Volleyball history that the Hellenic Volleyball Federation delivered a Masters tournament in the centre of the Greek capital – after previously doing so in 2010.

In the men’s final, Iasonas Kanellos and Angelos Mandilaris beat Stylianos Tzioumakas and Dimitris Chatzinikolaou 2-1 (21-14, 24-26, 15-13), and started in the best possible way this year’s Panhellenic Beach Volleyball Championship, as they hope to retain the title that they won in 2021.

In the women’s final, 19-year-old’s from Crete Georgina Antonakaki and Ioanna Perdikaki caused a major surprise. The young athletes started their journey from the qualifiers and eventually took the gold medal, edging Dimitra Manavi and Mirto Kalamaridou in the final 2-1 (21-14, 15-21, 18-16).

The 23-year-old Kanellos and Antonakaki received the awards for the MVPs of the competition.
