This weekend, while the domestic league challenges continued across the continent, all of us also kept an eye on the quarterfinals of the German Cup. The #CLVolleyM squads, BR Volleys, and Lüneburg secured their tickets to the semifinals and became one step closer to the national title. Apart from this, a thrilling five-setter determined who completed the week as leader in Belgium.
The quarterfinal round of the German DVV Cup took place this weekend. First, SVG Lüneburg took the court against VC Bitterfeld-Wolfen. Except for the second set, the former played a superior game and advanced to the next round by 3-1 (25-12, 22-25, 25-12, 25-17). The German opposite Yann Böhme was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the match.
Later, the reigning champions, the Berlin Recycling Volleys, faced Blue Volleys Gotha. Even though the first set was quite challenging, BR Volleys then proved their strength and booked their spot in the last four without losing any sets (3-0: 25-23, 25-19, 25-18). The MVP title went to German setter Johannes Tille, thanks to his outstanding performance.
In the most anticipated clash of the Belgian EuroMillions League, an exceptional set was played between #CLVolleyM participant Knack Roeselare and Volley Haasrode Leuven. While both teams fought hard and the score was tied at 1-1 after the first two sets, the third set became a real volleyball show. Both teams did not find the two-point gap for a long time, and finally, Leuven won the third set, which lasted for 45 minutes in total, by 40-38. However, this success was not enough for them to overpower Roeselare since the visitor side made an important comeback and became victorious in the clash by a comfortable tiebreak set (3-2: 13-25, 25-21, 38-40, 28-26, 15-6).
Thanks to this victory, Roeselare finished the weekend in the top position in the overall charts, and Leuven suffered their first defeat this season, placing second.
The #CLVolleyM squad Gas Sales Daiko Piacenza visited Sir Safety Perugia in the sixth week of the Italian Superlega. The result of this battle was important since both teams had only one loss prior to this clash, and the winner would secure the vice-leader position. Being aware of that, both teams fought very hard from beginning to end. Even though Piacenza side found a 2-0 lead in sets, Perugia did not give up and extended the battle to an immense tiebreak. In the 29-minute-long tiebreak, the Perugia side put the last ball to the court and won the match with a huge comeback (3-2: 21-25, 20-25, 25-18, 26-24, 20-18).
The Polish superstar Kamil Semeniuk became the top scorer in the winning side with 19 points, and Jesus Herrera (16), Oleh Plotnytskyi (14), Sebastian Sole (11), and Flavio Resende (10) were the other players who scored in double digits. Yoandy Leal’s 24 points were not enough for Piacenza for victory.
With that win, Perugia maintained their second position and extended the gap to one match with Piacenza. The leader, however, did not change: By defeating Monza in four sets, Itas Trentino remained undefeated and continued their way in the first place.
Now, all teams will start to focus entirely on their debuts in the CEV Champions League Volley group stage. We will especially take a closer look at BR Volleys, Roeselare, and Piacenza to see how the results of this weekend will affect their performance in their first clashes against their strong opponents.
