The most promising prospect in South American Volleyball will be wearing the Itas Trentino men’s jersey for the next two seasons. It is now official that 24-year-old Brazilian spiker Adriano Fernandes Procópio Xavier Cavalcante, known to everyone simply as Adriano, has signed with Trentino Volley. The Italian club acquired him from Volei Renata (where he played in the SuperLiga for the past five seasons), beating out competition from many other interested parties.
The star spiker of the Brazilian national team, with whom he has already won six medals in both youth and senior competitions, chose Trento to play abroad for the first time, convinced by the strength of the project and the opportunity to compete at the highest level in the Italian league. Despite his young age (he turned 24 in February), Adriano is a player who already boasts a wealth of international experience, gained not only while representing the Seleção but also by playing in the Club World Championship with Renata itself. A well-rounded and technically skilled spiker, his strengths lie in his receiving and attacking fundamentals, but he also has untapped potential in serving and blocking.
“I’m well aware of the value of a player like Adriano, whom I saw develop exponentially in Brazil when I was the coach of Sada Cruzeiro,” explains Trentino Volley head coach Marcelo Mendez. “He is a well-rounded spiker, effective in all fundamentals; especially in attack, serve, and reception. He has played many important matches on an international level and in the Brazilian league; he has great room for improvement because he is still young, and he can develop even better consistency. I am happy to have him on the team for next season. He’ll make a truly significant contribution.”
He will be the ninth Brazilian player in the more than 20-year history of Trentino Volley’s men’s team, following Heller, Nascimento, Riad, Raphael, Vissotto, Eder Carbonera, Lucarelli, and Flavio, and will wear the number 18 jersey.
