LAUSANNE UC put up brave fight but fall to Dukla LIBEREC in straight sets
News
On Wednesday night, LAUSANNE UC hosted the formidable Czech side Dukla LIBEREC at the Dorigny Sports Centre for the first leg of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 16th Finals. Despite a promising start that electrified the local crowd, the home side was ultimately defeated in straight sets (21-25, 17-25, 16-25).
A good start that sparked hope
In front of a packed Dorigny arena, Lorenzo Gallesio’s men stepped onto the court without fear. The first set showcased a spirited resistance from the Lausanne side. Aggressive at the service line and fuelled by undeniable determination, the University team went toe-to-toe with the Czechs for much of the opener (21-25), giving the fans real hope of an upset.
However, Dukla LIBEREC, well-versed in European competition, relied on their experience and physical power to stifle the rebellion. Despite the fighting spirit of captain Lucas Ineichen, Louis Luong, MVP for LAUSANNE UC, and their teammates, the Czech precision gradually widened the gap in the following two sets (17-25, 16-25), leaving LUC with few opportunities to claw their way back into the match.
Electric atmosphere at Dorigny
While the result was harsh, the evening was a victory for the club’s community. The LUC family turned out in force once again. The UNIL and EPFL university community rallied behind their team until the very last point, confirming that Dorigny remains a vibrant stronghold for European Volleyball nights.
Focus shifts to Czechia
After the holiday season, LAUSANNE UC will travel to Liberec (CZE) for the return leg scheduled for January 8. The task ahead is steep against a team that displayed its full quality, but the Lausanne players will head to this match with the intent to show their best face and gain valuable experience on the continental stage, and why not, hoping for an amazing qualification to the 8th Finals.
