The most elite squads of #CLVolleyM took the court for their national clashes this weekend across the continent, but two of them faced off in Italy, which resulted in a victory for Perugia. At the same time, the quarterfinal games were played in the German Cup, and two of the three #CLVolleyM squads secured their place in the last four.
Two CEV Champions League Volley teams, Sir Sicoma Monini Perugia and Allianz Milano took the court against each other in the ninth round of the Italian SuperLega. Milano started to match quite powerfully and won the first set without any difficulties. Starting from the beginning of the second set, the Perugia side started to play at a higher level and tied the score by 1-1. The third set, which lasted a total of 58 points, was quite exciting and completed with a victory for Perugia. By taking all the mental advantage at that point, the visitor side won the fourth set, as well as the match (3-1: 19-25, 25-20, 30-28, 25-15).
Ukrainian outside hitter Oleh Plotnytskyi became the most productive player with 21 points, including five aces and two blocks. Belgian opposite Ferre Rogers 17 points were not enough on the losing side. Perugia, therefore, maintained their perfect record, and with a total of 25 points, they completed this weekend at the top of the charts as well. Milano dropped to sixth place, with five wins in 10 games.
The quarterfinal clashes were played in this year’s German Cup and now all four semifinalists became clear. In one of the games, two #CLVolleyM faced off, where Berlin Recycling Volleys met SVG Lüneburg. Even though SVG Lüneburg found a 1-0 lead in sets, BR Volleys afterward pushed their limits and won the next three consecutive sets (3-1: 21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-22), and advanced to the semifinal stage.
German outside hitter Moritz Reichert was honored with the MVP title with his 15-point performance, including four aces. Theo Mohwinkel tallied 18 points in Lüneburg. The other #CLVolleyM club of the country, Helios Grizzlys Giesen also booked their ticket in the semifinals with a 3-0 win over Freiburg.
Both Jastrzebski Wegiel and Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie took three-set wins against relatively weaker opponents in the 13th round of the Polish PlusLiga. Similarly, HalkBank Ankara in Türkiye and Chaumont VB 52 in France achieved three-point victories in their national leagues and maintained their top ranks.
In the biggest clash of the weekend, Perugia once again proved how strong they can be against Milano with a victory by 3-1, while BR Volleys defeated Lüneburg in the German Cup quarterfinals. The weekend also went quite well for #CLVolleyM teams in Poland, Türkiye, and France. Now, it is time to get ready for the next games that await the top clubs.
