After starting their #CLVolleyW journey with victories, the most elite squads of the continent turned their eyes to the domestic competitions this weekend. While the clashes went pretty well for most of them, Schwerin received an unexpected defeat in the German Cup, and Milano managed to overpower their opponent in five sets.
The German CEV Champions League Volley participant SSC Palmberg Schwerin faced VfB Suhl Lotto Thüringen in the last 16 round of the German DVV Cup. The tension was quite high, especially in the second set, which Schwerin won by 33-31. Both teams had so many ups and downs throughout the game, and the score was tied to 2-2 at the end of the fourth set. In the tie-break, the Suhl side clearly played a superior game and booked their spot in the quarterfinal stage by a score of 3-2 (25-22, 31-33, 25-22, 21-25, 15-9).
2005-born Spanish outside hitter Julia De Paula Viana became the top scorer of the game with 23 points (including three blocks and three aces), and the Most Valuable Player, Ukrainian opposite Anna Artyshuk followed her with 22. On the losing side, German outside hitter Leana Grozer’s 15 and her compatriot Annegret Hölzig’s 14 points were not enough for victory.
Two of the Italian #CLVolleyW contenders, A. Carraro Imoco Volley Conegliano and Savino Del Bene Scandicci completed the weekend with easy victories and collected three points, but this was not the case for Numia Vero Volley Milano: They faced Eurotek Uyba Busto Arsizio in the seventh round of the Italian Serie A1. Both teams showed inconsistent performance from the first ball to the last, and the game was extended to the decisive final set after the first four ones. At the thrilling tie-break, by taking advantage of playing in front of fans, the Milano side became victorious (3-2: 25-18, 18-25, 25-20, 18-25, 15-10) and left the court with a win.
Dutch international Nika Daalderop was the most productive player on the winning side with a total of 25 points, but one player clearly stood out with her performance: Belgian middle blocker Laura Heyrman dominated the net with 5 key blocks, and with 14 points, she also contributed to their team pretty well. Benedetta Maria Sartori tallied 17 points in Busto Arsizio.
As predicted, the Turkish powerhouses, CEV Champions League Volley clubs Fenerbahce Medicana Istanbul, VakifBank Istanbul, Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul, and Hungarian leaders Vasas Obuda Budapest maintained their good records in overall standings, by beating their opponents without any difficulties.
This week, the volleyball actions will continue with the second round of the #CLVolleyW, and the winners of the first games also used the national tournament matches this weekend quite well to improve their own play. We will see which of those will succeed in repeating the same results they took and continuing their continental journey in the perfect way.
