Sporting Clube de Portugal has officially cemented its status as the truly dominant force in Portuguese Volleyball. On Wednesday night, the “Lions” secured their second consecutive national title – and the 8th in the club's history – with a convincing 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-19) victory over arch-rivals SL Benfica.

Match Highlights

The third final was a masterclass in consistency. Venezuelan opposite Edson Valencia led the scoring charts for the hosts with 16 points, while Brazilian middle blocker Kelvi Souza stood out for Benfica with 10 points. However, the collective strength of the “Lions” was too much for the “Eagles” to handle, as the home side dominated every department of the game. Beyond domestic success, Sporting’s season was highlighted by a competitive return to the CEV Champions League Volley, where they secured prestigious 3-1 victories against Polish giants Asseco Resovia RZESZÓW and Germany’s SVG LÜNEBURG.

“This match was a mirror of our entire season: a high level of consistency and a flawless final. We won seven derbies out of seven played this season. I lead a remarkable group and a tireless staff. With this atmosphere and this attitude, winning was the only option.”

João Coelho
Head coach of Sporting CP

“We showed we were superior to Benfica throughout this final series. We lost only one match during the entire season in domestic competitions. This is perhaps Sporting’s best season ever. We achieved the treble and proved that when you work with focus, the results follow.”

Tiago Pereira
Sporting CP captain

Historical Context

This victory marks the first time Sporting CP has achieved back-to-back titles since the legendary run of the early 90s (1991-1994). Sporting de Espinho still leads the historical ranking with 18 titles, followed by Técnico (13) and Benfica (12). Sporting CP’s current trajectory suggests a new era of dominance in Portuguese Volleyball. The 2025/2026 podium of the Liga Una Seguros was completed by Leixões Sport Club, which finished the competition in third place.
