The European journey of e-work BUSTO ARSIZIO ended on Wednesday night after the ‘Butterflies’ lost the return match of the women’s CEV Cup Playoffs against THY ISTANBUL by the same score (0-3) as the previous fixture from two weeks ago. The Turkish team contested this match without coach Marcello Abbondanza and their star setter Naz Aydemir Akyol. The match, played in Italy since Turkish authorities have suspended all sporting events until further notice in response to a devastating quake, did have a social side to it, since all proceeds from the ticket sale will be donated to the population affected by the earthquake. The Lord Mayor of Busto Arsizio, Mr Emanuele Antonelli, handed over a € 5,000 check the Turkish consul, Mehmet Özöktem.

The players of THY ISTANBUL celebrate their second 3-0 triumph over BUSTO ARSIZIO in as many matches

“It was a very delicate moment for us, both because of what happened in Türkiye last week and what has happened with our coach. I think we reacted very well, played extremely well, and won an important match against a team as strong as BUSTO ARSIZIO.”

Player of THY ISTANBUL

It was immediately obvious that THY ISTANBUL had travelled to Italy very much determined to secure their spot in the quarterfinals. Kiera Van Ryk and Hanna Orthmann were those who set the pace of the game for THY ISTANBUL (16-12) and by scoring eight and six points respectively, they paved the way towards a 25-18 first set win. Alice Degradi and Carli Lloyd put more pressure from the service line for BUSTO ARSIZIO in the early stages of the second set (12-10). However, THY ISTANBUL responded well, edging ahead at 16-13 and even though the ‘Butterflies’ closed in at 20-21, Van Ryk proved decisive again as THY ISTANBUL sealed a 25-22 win to punch their ticket to the next round. The third set did not have much importance anymore and the two teams used most of their reserve players, with THY ISTANBUL eventually completing their triumph courtesy of a 25-20 score.

“We were coming from two important league games, where we played well both against Novara and Vallefoglia. This evening, however, we did the opposite of what we were supposed to do, waiting for THY ISTANBUL to give us something for free, so to speak. We need reset and focus on the national championship, where we can still do well.”
