European Cup rookies Megabox Group VALLEFOGLIA opened the first leg of the CEV Volleyball Challenge Cup 2026 final with confidence. A powerful spike from Erblira Bici - the hosts' leader with 8 points in the first set, including 7 kills - got the match underway and was followed by an ace from Sonia Candi, giving Vallefoglia an early boost. Panathinaikos Athens, led by Haylie Bennett (4 points in the set), stayed close during the first half and kept the pressure on. The turning point came at 14-12 when Gaia Giovannini stepped to the service line and sparked a decisive run that carried Vallefoglia to a 19-12 lead. Although the visitors tried to respond, the Italian side maintained control and closed the opening set 25-20.

Panathinaikos showed their teeth in the second set, taking control early and building a 10-5 lead, powered by Micaya White and Monika Lampkowska, who both scored 7 points in the set. Although the hosts built a comfortable 10-4 lead and many might have thought the match was already decided, Panathinaikos proved that nothing is over before the final whistle. I believe we can play even better, but we should not overlook that we secured a result that still gives us the chance to fight in the second leg. I want to sincerely thank our fans who were by our side today - they were amazing once again - and we promise to give everything we have in the return match."
