The first edition of the Sierra Nevada Snow Volley Open was held this past weekend, thus coinciding with the absolute premiere of such an event on Spanish soil. Snow Volleyball has been making great strides since its introduction a few years ago and Sierra Nevada, an iconic and renowned ski resort which has played host to many major international competitions in a variety of winter sports, was an ideal choice and location for the delivery of such an event. The competition featured eight teams, each consisting of two male and one female players, competing for honours at the first Snow Volleyball official competition ever organised in Spain.
The action started on Saturday and was followed by an après-ski evening in Pradollano where the attendees were able to live a unique experience, while the Sunday session began directly with the semis. Beachbol La Malva defeated Vóley Playa Madrid, thereby securing their spot in the grand finale. The other place was taken by the players of Pinocchio Poniente Benidorm, who beat their opponents representing Volei Praia Vigo.
The team from Madrid eventually sealed their place on the podium by winning the bronze medal match. Immediately afterwards, the title-deciding match was a real joy to witness with Beachbol La Malva edging Pinocchio Poniente Benidorm in an exciting third set to win the first edition of the Sierra Nevada Snow Volley Open. The organisers hope to make this event a regular feature on the Snow Volleyball calendar and a competition of international calibre as well.
To close the day, it was time for the medal ceremony. Firstly, the MVP trophy of the tournament was presented to Blanca Seguí from Beachbol La Malva before medals were awarded to the top three teams.
This truly special competition organised in a dream environment had the support of the Department of Tourism, Culture and Sports of the Government of Andalusia, Madison, the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation, Higuerón Resort, Ambilamp, Joma and the Sierra Nevada ski resort itself.
