On Sunday, Team Austria missed out on a place in the finals of the women’s CEV European Silver League 2025. Head coach Roland Schwab’s team needed at least one point from the match against Switzerland, who had already secured their spot in the final, but fell short with a 0-3 (19-25, 16-25, 18-25) home defeat in Amstetten.
Austria got off to a promising start in the second set with a 5-0 lead, but then lost their rhythm and eventually dropped the set clearly. Overall, the Austrian team was too error-prone and imprecise to seriously challenge the in-form Swiss side. Top scorers for Austria were Kora Schaberl (9), Srna Vardjan (7), Carmen Raab (6), and Nina Nesimovic (6). Switzerland’s top scorer was Tabea Eichler with 17 points.
Switzerland once again demonstrated their quality in Amstetten, converting their second match point after only 67 minutes. They completed the League Round with six wins in as many matches and without dropping a single set. On Saturday, the Swiss team had already secured their place in the final with a dominant 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-18, 25-23) over Latvia. In the final, they will face Latvia once more in a battle for promotion to the Golden League.
Roland Schwab“The Swiss team has an outstanding offensive game – we couldn’t get a handle on it and unfortunately lost our own game in the process. Throughout the entire Silver League, we left a few opportunities on the table, not just today. But the development is there, and it’s positive. The European Championship qualification is within reach!”
Victoria Deisl: “The disappointment is huge. Unfortunately, we didn’t make it. It was hard to get into the game – Switzerland plays faster than other teams.”
Nina Nesimovic: “I’m still proud of the team. We gave it everything we had. Now our full focus shifts to the European Championship qualification.”
Austrian Volleyball Federation (ÖVV) President Gernot Leitner: “Our team is still too inexperienced for the Golden League at this stage. Switzerland fully deserved to advance.”
Switzerland head coach Lauren Bertolacci: “I’m really satisfied. Our goal is to qualify for the World Championship, so every match and every point counts. Of course, we want to win the Silver League and get promoted to the Golden League.”
