Bratislava, Slovakia, August 31, 2019. Not just the performances of Team Slovakia, also the atmosphere at Ondrej Nepela Ice Arena helps increase the number of spectators during the EuroVolley games in Bratislava. The ambiance is mostly due to the work of a world famous entertainment duo from Austria, Florian Rudig and DJ Stari. On Thursday, afternoon, 5,730 people watched the Pool D match between Slovakia and Russia, thus accounting for an all-time record of attendance for women’s Volleyball in the country.
Rudig, a former ORF reporter and presenter, was a youth Austrian champion before, and he played Volleyball until the age of 20. He knows what Volleyball needs to attract the fans, especially since some do not always understand such a technical game.
Both entertainers look very happy with their job in the Slovak capital. “It is a surprise, how well it works. The people are freaking out here. I mean in such a positive way. The attendance is increasing and I feel a lot of energy from the stands. Moreover, I have never seen such a light show before. It helps create something new. To be honest, I have goose bumps during the Slovakia games,” praised the Slovak fans Florian Rudig, who did a similar job also during the Rio 2016 Olympics.
“I do not know how many real Volleyball fans are in the stadium or how many people have been coming here because they wanted to see the national team or just want to enjoy the party. It goes beyond my expectations. However, that is the point we want to reach. That was our goal,” added Vienna-born DJ Stari.
His jingles help fans to be noisy and feel more connected with the game. “If there is a spectacular spike or a huge block and people hear the beat, we have to use it. It is going well in Slovakia. You have a fair audience, nobody whistling or booing as sometimes happened in other places in the world, when the opponents serve. That is something I do not really like, because it is disrespectful,” said Stari. Volleyball is a special sport, but their show too. “There are not many sports in the world - actually I cannot see any other one - in which we can run this type of entertainment,” admitted Stari.
Both entertainers have known each other for more than 15 years and both have the same goal during sports events. “We try to entertain people and to make visible what is going on in the players’ mind. If that happens, I guess people understand why this sport is so attractive,” added speaker Rudig, who has a small problem during the home-side games. “I cannot sit on my chair, I want jump to the field of play. You know why. I was a player too,” he says with a smile.
