Bulgaria’s young generation determined to turn hard lessons into EuroVolley resolve

Testing yourself against the world’s best in the Volleyball Nations League (VNL) is a trial by fire. For Bulgaria - the youngest squad in this year’s tournament - facing elite global powerhouses every single week provided a sharp, uncompromising masterclass in top-tier Volleyball. Now, as EuroVolley rapidly approaches, the Lionesses are preparing to step into Pool B in Brno, where formidable challenges await against co-hosts Czechia, European titans Serbia, Ukraine, Greece, and Austria. Yet, rather than looking back at the difficult summer with regret, a quiet, focused poise lingers over their training camp. The high-level lessons learned on the global stage have become the very armor they plan to wear on the continental stage. 

Finding the spark in a summer of growth

For young opposite Mikaela Stoyanova, the challenges faced in the VNL weren't a setback - they were a catalyst.

At a stage in her career where high-pressure environments can feel overwhelming, Stoyanova points to a transformative year playing in Italy as an important personal anchor. It was a season spent navigating fierce rallies, tactical warfare, and tight moments - the kind of environment where patience becomes a survival skill.

"Certainly, the experience in Italy helps in some crucial moments of the game, but a single year cannot make that big of an impact on its own," she says with characteristic humility. "Still, this one year changed a lot of things for me and helped me grow. The ultimate goal now is simply to perform better than before and show the best of ourselves."

Reframing the narrative: redemption

Sitting in the mastermind seat is head coach Marcello Abbondanza, whose outlook on the summer is deliberate, measured, and entirely focused on the long game. Ask him if EuroVolley is a shot at "revenge," and he will quickly redefine the mission.

"The European Championship certainly represents a new opportunity, but I don't like to talk about revenge or a rematch," Abbondanza explains firmly. "The VNL was a very tough experience, where we faced top-level teams with an extremely young group. We paid for our inexperience, but we also gathered fundamental insights into our players' growth."

Rather than trying to scrub the summer campaign from memory, Abbondanza wants his players to carry those insights directly onto the court at EuroVolley.

"Now we look forward," he adds. "The European Championship is a different competition where, above all, we want to prove that we are a more mature, consistent, and competitive team.

The freedom to fail, the courage to rise

Building a long-term future for a national team requires a delicate balance: instilling rigorous tactical discipline without stifling the instinctual, fearless energy that young athletes possess. For Abbondanza, cultivating that environment isn't just a coaching philosophy - it's a promise to his squad.

"I believe a coach's job is to create an environment where players can express their talent without the fear of making mistakes," Abbondanza notes. "Young players must have the freedom to grow, but this freedom must be accompanied by responsibility and discipline."

That distinction - between a natural learning mistake and a lapse in effort - is the cornerstone of Bulgaria’s mental preparation for the weeks ahead.

"Technical mistakes are part of the growth process; what we cannot accept is a lack of intensity, concentration, or attitude. If a player makes a mistake while trying to do the right thing, I will continue to trust her. That is how you build the future of a national team."

As the days tick down to the opening whistle of EuroVolley, Bulgaria steps onto the court not as a team burdened by summer struggles, but as a unit galvanised by how much they have grown. Driven by a coach who trusts the process and young leaders who aren't afraid to play boldly, the Lionesses are ready to prove that youth is no longer an excuse - it's their greatest source of fire.
