On Wednesday, Sweden won the first leg of the Men’s CEV European Silver League Final with a 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 25-22, 25-19) victory over Hungary. The match was played at the Messzi István Sportcsarnok in Kecskemét
Hungary started strong, taking the first point of the match. At 12-12 in the opening set, Péter Varga had already scored five points for the home side. Hungary kept their momentum and won the first set by 25-18. It was only the second set Sweden had lost in the entire competition, after winning six matches and just one dropped set.
Sweden, coached by Gido Vermeulen, responded by winning the next three sets as Viktor Lindberg was the top scorer of the match with 18 points, 2 kill blocks, and 1 ace.
EKSTRAND Hampus“We had outstanding block defense. We came out strong. This first victory was important for us, and since we won, it will be a tough fight at home.”
The second leg of the final will take place in Sweden, where the home team will have the chance to finish the job in front of their fans. With a 3-1 win from the first leg, Sweden is one victory away from lifting the 2025 CEV Silver League trophy.
Hungary must win the return match either 3-0 or 3-1 to force a golden set. Only by winning that decisive set can they overturn Sweden’s first-leg advantage and take the Silver League title. It will be a tough challenge, but the team will be looking to build on the strong moments they showed early in the first leg.
