Beach Volleyball to take centre stage in Madrid
News
Beach Volleyball will be taking centre stage for the next couple of weeks in Madrid where the Puerta de Hierro Beach Volleyball Centre will host two stops of the Volleyball World Beach Pro Tour, a men’s tournament from May 11 to 14 and a women’s competition from May 18 to 21, as well as the first round of the men’s Nations Cup, which will be played on May 15 and 16.
Local authorities visited the renovated Beach Volleyball Centre (following the construction of two new courts) at the Puerta de Hierro Sports Park and presented the three events. Sofia Miranda, Sports Councillor of the City of Madrid, and Alberto Tomé, Sports Vice-Councillor of the Madrid Community and Felipe Pascual, President of the Madrid Volleyball Federation (FMVB) and Vice-President of the Royal Spanish Volleyball Federation (RFEVB), along with other representatives from the City Council and the Community of Madrid, checked the state of the facilities after the improvement works and welcomed some of the athletes who will contest the competition.
Alberto Tomé positively acknowledged that “for the third consecutive year, Madrid is the epicentre of great international Beach Volleyball events. Through sport, Madrid grows by increasing the number of events and promoting women’s athletes to reach the levels they deserve.”
Sofía Miranda expressed her satisfaction with “consolidating this event on the international calendar and the city of Madrid as the organiser,” and congratulated the FMVB for achieving the ‘Green Sport Flag’ certification, “a commitment to sustainability, as we want all events in the city of Madrid to be sustainable.”
The President of the Madrid Volleyball Federation and Vice-President of the RFEVB, Felipe Pascual, showed his happiness for the start of the competitions:
“The day has finally arrived. It has been a lot of work for many months, in conjunction with local administrations. Now, we are receiving the athletes, we have fifteen days of Beach Volleyball ahead of us to enjoy a competition where we hope to repeat the successes of previous editions.”
With these three events, Madrid consolidates its presence on the international calendar, after two years of hosting FIVB World Tour events and the second phase of the CEV Continental Cup in 2021. In addition to these top-level events, the Puerta de Hierro Sports Park will host the U18 European Beach Volleyball Championship next August, to account for “the most comprehensive Beach Volleyball offer in our history in Madrid,” said Felipe Pascual, in a venue that promises spectacle, fun and facilities for fans who will visit.
