In the men’s competition, Antonio Saucedo Amodeo and Alvaro Viera Iglesias of Spain defeated Greek duo Triantafyllos Restemis and Aristeidis Chandrinos in straight sets 2-0 (21-15, 22-20). Later in the day, the Spanish duo beat Turkish team Batuhan Kuru and Necmi Ayberk Gulluk 2-1 (21-14, 15-21, 15-11) in the last match of Pool A to finish the pool stage on top of the charts. “It was a difficult match but we knew what we had to do, and I think it was good game,” said Saucedo Amodeo.
Guilherme Maia and Filipe Leite of Portugal, Maximilian Just and Lui Wüst of Germany, Ben Stockhammer and Noel Krassnig of Austria, Rok Mozic and Rok Bracko of Slovenia and Thibaud Colomb and Cyril Kolb from Switzerland completed a clean sweep of their matches in the pool stage as well.
In the women’s competition, Slovenia’s Asja Sen and Ira Kadunc proved their strength by beating the defending champions, Latvia’s Anete Namike and Varvara Brailko 2-1 (10-21, 21-19, 15-7) after fighting for some 39 minutes. “We played very bad in the first set but we fought until the last ball and I think we did well in defence and offence. So, it was a good game for us in the end,” said Sen.
The best match of the day featured France’s Anouk Dupin/Justine Fabre and Belgium’s Jade Van Deun and Marion Beauve. The French team defeated their rivals in a tiebreak 2-1 (18-21, 21-17, 15-8) to qualify for the Round of 24.
Anouk Dupin“We won twice and lost once in our pool to finish second. We will face Serbia in the next round. We are very happy with our performance so far. It was very hard to play two tiebreak games for us.”
