SCA zonal event underway in Scotland

SCA’s first Beach Volleyball event of 2022 kicked off Friday on the West Coast of Scotland at the newly opened Kyle Academy Beach Volleyball facility. Friday saw five rounds of pool play in total as teams competed for places in the quarterfinals.

The first matches of the day saw first seed Scottish pair Lynne Beattie/Melissa Coutts swiftly beat Ireland’s Ellen Creighton/Lara McNichols 21-6, 21-5 while England’s Katie Keefe/Isabelle Tucker eased past the Monegasque pair of Caroline Fuentes van Klaveren/Camille Orengo 21-13, 21-7 in the first round of women’s pool play.

The men’s first round of pool play followed, which included a close game for top seed Ross McKelvie/Callum Stewart who fell 21-18, 21-17 to the Welsh pair Conor Robins/Davoud Ahmad Panah.

The women’s second round produced the first three-setters as the young Scottish pair Karolina Wroblewska/Ellen Ranklin just lost out to Fuentes/Orengo 20-22, 21-17, 15-11 while Northern Ireland’s Emma Patterson/Sarah Scott snuck a win over Creighton/McNichols 18-21, 21-13, 16-14.

The men’s second round of pool play also produced some close games particularly for Northern Irish pair Jonathan Workman/Jeffrey Scott who earned a hard-fought victory over Scots Ruari Souter/Murray Paterson 24-22, 21-13.

The final round of women’s pool play capped the day off to finalise the standings and set up Saturday’s quarterfinals as follows:

Beattie/Coutts (SCO) vs. Fuentes/Orengo (MON) - 11:40 AM

Barbour/McReady (SCO) vs. Gormally/Teterycz (IRL) - 11:40 AM

Rantala/Muukka (FIN) vs. Mills/Montgomery (NIR) - 12:30 PM

Keefe/Tucker (ENG) vs. Patterson/Scott (NIR) - 12:30 PM

Saturday will also see the Men’s final round of pool play in the morning before the quarterfinals and the women’s semi-finals will finish the Saturday off, setting up an exciting final day on Sunday.
