On Thursday night, Arkas IZMIR of Türkiye secured a comfortable victory away from home by defeating 3-0 (25-14, 25-17, 25-21) the Bulgarian reigning national champions Neftohimik BURGAS in the first round of the men’s CEV Cup 16th Finals.

The German star György Grozer set the pace for the visiting team by scoring 15 points. However, the hosts’ Pakistani-born opposite Murad Khan was the game’s top scorer with a personal tally of 18 points.

There was only some intrigue in the third set, in which the Bulgarian champions cut their opponents’ advantage to two points only – 20-22, but their valiant efforts were not rewarded at least with a set win.

The return match will be taking place next week in Izmir. Earlier this season, the team from Bulgaria contested the CEV Champions League qualifying rounds, finishing fourth in the second round Pool VI before moving to the CEV Cup.
