CEV Champions League Volley Rookies won the big domestic matches

This weekend, CEV Champions League Volley participants faced off against each other in two big clashes, and the newcomers of the tournament managed to beat their strong and experienced opponents after tough battles.

In the most anticipated clash of the week in Italy, CEV Champions League Volley rookie Vero Volley Monza visited the reigning titleholder A. Carraro Imoco Volley Conegliano in the 18th round of the Superleague. Even though Imoco started well and took the first set, Monza showed superior performance, especially in the fourth set, and overpowered their biggest rival in the league by 3-1 (23-25, 25-20, 27-25, 25-13).

 

Italian superstar Paola Egonu was the only player who scored in double digits on Imoco and became the top scorer of the match with 28 points. Polish young talent Magdalena Stysiak led Monza for their thirteenth victory with 23 points, followed by Anna Davyskiba (16) and Dana Rettke (15).

 

By this result, Imoco fell to third place in the charts, while the CEV Challenge Cup semifinalist Savino Del Bene Scandicci took the top position.

THY Istanbul

The other big match of the week was held in Turkey: The CEV Champions League Volley newcomer THY Istanbul met the undefeated leader of Pool D, Fenerbahce Opet Istanbul, in the 18th week of the Sultanlar League.

 

With the help of their fans, Fenerbahce took the first two sets and found 2-0; however, THY made an unforgettable comeback in front of almost 4000 fans and overpowered the host in five sets (2-3: 25-23, 25-16, 22-25, 22-25, 9-15).

 

Mostly thanks to their star American setter Lauren Carlini, THY had a balanced score distribution, and five players scored in double digits. However, alongside the American outside hitter Maddison Kingdon Rishel who became the top scorer of the squad with 16, Turkish opposite Polen Unver, who scored 11 with 8 of them was only on the tie-break, and the new transfer of the team, German Hanna Orthmann, who scored 5 in the fifth set and 10 in total, highlighted in the derby with their performances.

THY, because of the victory rose one place and passed Fenerbahce in the overall standing, while CEV Cup squad Eczacibasi Dynavit remained on top after this round.

 

Another clash between CEV Champions League Volley participants, Dinamo Ak-Bars Kazan-Dinamo Moscow match was postponed due to the coronavirus.

 

This weekend, two big matches pitted CEV Champions League Volley squads against each other, and the rookies succeeded in beating their strong opponents after contentious battles.
