Yesterday, the final match of the Turkish Super Cup took place, and two CEV Champions League Volley squads faced off to take the first trophy of the season. The reigning Turkish Cup and Turkish Sultanlar League champions Fenerbahce Medicana Istanbul reached the top of the podium by defeating the defending silver medalists of both tournaments, Eczacibasi Dynavit Istanbul in four sets.
Fenerbahce started the match strongly and built a 21-16 lead in the first set. After that point, even though Eczacibasi attempted a comeback, the Yellow Angels secured the first set by a score of 25-23. Eczacibasi responded by pushing their limits in the second set, leveling the score at 1-1 with a 25-22 win. From that point on, Fenerbahce, also benefiting from a huge crowd of fans, clearly dominated the third and fourth sets and became the Super Cup champions for the fifth time in their history. (3-1: 25-23, 22-25, 25-17, 25-18).
The Most Valuable Player was none other than the Turkish superstar of the winning side, Melissa Teresa Vargas: Including three aces, three blocks, and a 57% successful attack percentage, the Turkish opposite scored 27 points in total and became the most productive player of her team. Brazilian international Ana Cristina De Souza contributed with 21 points, followed by the captain Eda Erdem (8 points) and Bulgarian outside hitter Elitse Vasileva Atanasijevic (6 points). Serbian opposite Tijana Boskovic tallied 28 points on Eczacibasi side, which was not enough for the victory.
Now, both teams will start to focus on their upcoming national league battles, but one thing is for sure: By winning all national trophies last season, Fenerbahce showed how strong they are and why they will be considered the pre-favorite of each tournament they participate in.
