The men’s team of Fenerbahçe PRL ISTANBUL has advanced to the 8th Finals of the CEV Cup. They made up for their 2-3 loss from last week in Innsbruck by recording a 3-1 victory (32-34, 28-26, 25-19, 25-19) over reigning Austrian national champions Hypo Tirol.
Fenerbahçe started the match with a line-up consisting of Vahit Emre Savaş, Drazen Luburic, Yiğit Gülmezoğlu, Mahdi Jelveh Ghaziani, Dick Kooy, Murat Yenipazar and liberos Hasan Yeşilbudak and Caner Dengin. The first set, which lasted approximately 40 minutes, was an incredibly close affair, with Hypo Tirol eventually emerging victorious at 34-32. The hosts started the second set well and secured a five-point lead. However, they could not prevent their opponent’s 5-0 positive series, and the score was equalised at 21-21. The last stage of the second se was filled with drama, but this time Yiğit Gülmezoğlu finished it in favour of Fenerbahçe at 28-26. Looking quite dominant in the subsequent sets, Fenerbahçe cruised to a double 25-19 win to win the match and progress to the next stage of the competition, where they are due to play Draisma Dynamo APELDOORN of the Netherlands.
Stefan Chrtiansky“We played very good Volleyball and there is nothing I shall complain about when talking to my players. Up until halfway through the match, we did really challenge Fenerbahçe. Leaving European competition is obviously sad, but from now on we will focus solely on the Austrian national league and Cup.”
Austria’s second representative in the CEV Cup failed to progress as well. After losing 0-3 away from home, vice-champions SK Zadruga AICH/DOB fought bravely and eventually secured a 3-2 home win (27-25, 19-25, 28-30, 25-17, 20-18), which nevertheless means it is Greece’s AONS Milon Nea Smyrni ATHENS who advance to the next round.
