Foinikas Syrou ONEX end season on a high with Greek League Cup title

The domestic season ended in Greece with Foinikas Syrou ONEX claiming the 2020/2021 edition of the Greek League Cup ‘Nikos Samaras’ after a 3-1 (25-15, 25-21, 22-25, 25-20) victory in a thrilling final with hosts Filippos Verias.

In the semi-finals, Foinikas Syrou swept aside league champions Olympiacos Piraeus and Filippos Verias managed to edge PAOK Thessaloniki in four sets.

Slovenian outside hitter Ziga Stern received the prize for the Most Valuable Player of the finals.

“I did not come to the Final Four for the MVP award but for the trophy. We played two very difficult games and it was from the beginning a team effort. We did not manage to win the championship, but the season comes to an end on a high note for us.”

Foinikas Syrou ONEX won their second title in the competition, after taking the first ever League Cup back in 2012.

The Greek League Cup ‘Nikos Samaras’ is the third most prestigious competition in men’s Volleyball and it pays tribute to Nikolaos Samaras, one of the best Greek Volleyball players in history, who prematurely passed away on January 4, 2013.
