On Wednesday night, AC PAOK THESSALONIKI of Greece hosted OTP Banka Branik MARIBOR at Mikra, knowing they needed to overturn the 0-3 defeat from the first leg if they were to stay in contention for a spot in the 8th Finals of the women’s CEV Cup.

PAOK fought hard but they lost the key points in their re-match with OTP Banka Branik MARIBOR of Slovenia

In the first set, despite trailing early (4-7, 9-12, 13-17), PAOK showed character and persistence, fighting their way back into contention. With solid defence and more effective attacking choices, the Black-and-Whites managed to level the score and even take the lead at 20-19, thereby putting pressure on their rivals. Despite their effort and fighting spirit up to 23-23, details in the final moments decided the set, with the Slovenian side taking the last two points.

In the second set, with their backs against the wall, PAOK entered determined to react and stay alive in the battle for qualification. The hosts controlled the set for a long stretch, maintaining a steady lead (13-11, 16-12, 20-17) through good organisation and strong attacks. However, the closing stage took a dramatic turn, as PAOK stalled offensively, allowing MARIBOR to overturn the score at 21-22. Despite the relentless effort and hard-fought rallies, the set turned into a thriller, with PAOK battling to the end but ultimately losing 27-29 – a result that secured qualification for the Slovenians to the next round.

In the third set, although qualification was no longer within reach, PAOK displayed admirable fighting spirit and never gave up. The home side played with composure and determination, staying close in the score and contesting every rally. The set developed into a true nail-biter, with both teams trading points. PAOK’s hard work at the net and active presence in all areas kept hope alive until the very end. However, MARIBOR found the solutions in the crucial moments and took the set 25-23, thereby sealing the final 3-0.

PAOK points came from four aces, 52 attacks, three blocks and 14 opponent errors, while MARIBOR had two aces, 49 attacks, 14 blocks, and 14 opponent errors.
